Whirring/whistling noise from engine...

My engine is making a whirring/or whistling noise when idiling and when I shut the engine off it makes a howling noise for about 5-10 seconds. I checked the fan and had it not spinning and it still made this noise. It almost sounds like it's coming from the back of the engine or perhaps inside the engine. Anyone have any ideas what it could be????

hows the oil pressure? is the starter disengaging? have someone start the car while you have the hood popped and than have them cut the car off and see if it is still turning over with the motor off

Oil pressure is good and the starter is disengaging.

Yea, fuel pump is kind of what I had in mind too, but would the car still be getting enough fuel? It's idling fine still, aside from the noise.

I'll try to get a sound clip of the file maybe by tommorow.

Maybe the gasket between the upper and lower might not be sealed, the pcv valve hose might have slipped to let some air escape, ot the fuel rail hasnt seated on one of the injectors all the way. In my experience those are all things that make a whine or whistle. good luck

Thanks, I'll make sure I check those tommorow morning. I did remove my upper intake about 2 months ago to poilish it, perhaps I didn't bolt it down hard enough.

Do you have a mech fan? How do you get it to stop spinning? WHen motor mounts go south, the fan can hit the bottom of the fan shroud.

It's the stock clutch style fan. To get it to stop spinning I just removed the fan belt and let the car idle for a bit, to check if it was any of the belt driven accessories that was making the noise, but it wasn't.

Checked the gasket between upper and lower, it's fine, same with the fuel rail. Stupid question, but where is the pcv valve located?

Also, I pinpointed the noise and it sounds like it is coming from the intake manifold. When I shut off my engine I get the whine for about 5-10 seconds, then it almost sounds like there is air escaping from either the upper manifold or maybe one of the hoses below it. Anyway, that's what I'm going to check next.

Well, I figured out the problem, turns out that it was my power brakes booster that was creating the problem by causing a vacuum and sucking in air. I knew I had a problem with the booster but didn't think it was also causing this whining noise. Anyway, thanks to all for your help suggestions.

Ive had the same prob for almost 2 years now. Ive had 2 different intakes on with all new gaskets and hose's. what was actually wrong with your brake booster and how did you fix it. oh yeah what did it cost.

It can be normal to hear compression bleed off also.

When I use the brake I can hear air escaping, coming from the brake booster. I haven't had it fixed yet, that's happening next Thursday, but the mechanic said it sounds like the power brake booster has a leak and is sucking in air, and when I shut the engine off the whining noise im hearing is that air being bled off. It's gonna cost me $200 for parts and labour.

I have the whirring whistling noise too after my engine warms up a bit. Started doing it after my intake manifold swap and CAI install. I've been over everything and can't find it. Maybe my booster is having trouble too.

Mine was fairly easy to diagnose because my car runs perfect except for the power brakes, just tapping on them lightly and I could hear the air escaping from the booster. Check your brakes, if you hear a faint "whooshing" noise, like when you expel air from an air mattress, then it's likely your booster that needs to be replaced.

I also thought it was my intake at first, almost convinced the noise was coming from there, but checked it all out and it's fine, just hard to know exactly where noises are coming from under the hood.

The noise after shutting off just started on my car. I'll check the Brake booster. I just had my AC worked on, replaced the Accumalator and hose, so I thought it was something to do with that.

I'm wondering if this my problem im having with the leak from the upper intake manifold. how do i check for the power brake booster having a problem and where is it?
