Do a blow down compression test when you have the engine in a running condition. A blow down test puts compressed air into the cylinders and allows you to listen for leaks. Bad rings would cause most of the leakage to be heard at the crankcase breather or oil filller. See the link in my sig to find out more information and for instructions on how to build your own blow down tester.

i would check the oil and see if its kinda milky cause white smoke = blown head gasket most of the time (i know this from experience sadly) i would also invest in (or see if you can rent a leak down tester to check it first. if your not afraid to rip apart the motor then thats the only way to be 110% sure whats wrong.
