Who has installed new gas tank???

OK, i bought a new gas tank from CjPonyparts, ive already put in a new sendor and pickup assembly and decided to go ahead and paint the tank to help fight off rust. my question is: is there any prep before filling it up with gas? will anything in the tank, i.e coatings or what not contaminate the gas or is it good to go? the tank is made by that company in canada that makes most of the repro tanks for our cars. thanks!

I recently put in a new gas tank. I wouldn't put anything on the inside. The tanks are inexpensive and easily replaced. Any kind of a sealer put on the inside that decides to let loose and turn to goo will cause more trouble than it's worth. :)

the plastic one will work for a little while, but sooner then later its gonna dissinegrate, the brass floats are just more reliable and will function better with loads of gunk on it vs. plastic, well judging from my buddys ranger and mine...

Make sure to do the sealer of some sort. Mine lets exhaust into the trunk which eventually gets into the passenger compartment. I used the gasket that comes with the tank and now I wish I would have used RTV or something...maybe not RTV but something that would seal and come off easy if I ever have to replace it again.
Other wise it's a pretty easy project and I didn't do anything to prep the tank before use.

i uesd a black silicone type stuff, similar to rtv but not. i sealed it nice and good and just let it mush out the sides. i then used some undercoating and sprayed the top and the bottom of the tank to make it look good.

its been there for abuot 6 or 7 months and no sign of comin off.

well, yes i used a brass float, thats what the sendor came with, and i guess thats good considering it was just a repro sendor. Also, the tank wasnt supposed to have a drain plug, i didnt pay for it, but when i opened the box, it had one, so thats a bonus. i primed the bottom, then painted it with a silver ceramic engine paint. i wasnt sure if the tank had any kind of paint on it already, it looked like bare steel, and that would rust in days. zinc sounds familiar though. also, i will paint the top once its installed in the trunk. thanks for the answers. that is all i was looking for is whether or not there was already anything in the tank that would mess up the gas. alright, thanks guys, ill install it very soon!

dunno if your doin this already or now, but take pictures of the install on this and everything else your doing. i have hundreds of resotration pics on the computer and it helps alot if you ever decide to sell.

Well, im not planning on selling it anytime, but you never know... everythings for sale for the right price :) at any rate, ive been taking pictures of everything, i have set up a scrapbook and also have the digital files on my computer. i just want to scrapbook everything, especially since its my first restoration. i havent installed the gas tank yet, i probably will tomorrow. its funny, the old tank is in good condition, i just wanted to replace it, and whoever had this car before me is either lazy or stupid or both. the gas tank wasnt screwed in at all, the tank is just sitting in its hole in the trunk. so i had to order a new hardware kit too! ive discovered alot of interesting stuff doing this so far!
