Just a few questions for those of ya with a C4 (1967 type)...

What are your experiences running 500+ horses thru a c4?

Who makes the best rebuild/shift kit for drag racing?

What torque converter do you use, and how high a stall?

and where to get a good driveshaft?

Im new to the automatic tranny, and for drag racing wanna try something new, tired of breakin t-5's and before that never used anything but a toploader so i dont really know squat about the c4.

Thanks in advance for all your thoughts.

the C4 can be built to handle up to 800hp at this point, though some tranny builders are working on getting 1200hp handling capability from it. B&M, art carr, performance automatic, and tci seem to be the best C4 builders around.

i can tell you that what ever hp you have a place called www.sr7performance.com can build you a c4 for a very resonable price. They also do custom converters. They can probably build you a aod that will handle the power. They built my aod and it can handle 850hp and a 1 year warranty. really good service. tell them jason sent you.

c4's rule! can't say the same for stock though. there are some design flaws that these speed shops have to overcome.

I have to diagree with the best builders. The one with most innovations is JPT in michigan, he invented some or most of the c-4 modifications readily used today. He also makes a beautiful custom valve body with transbrake. It is a real pain to get him to move quick though. The next, who I have no complaints about is dynamics up in connecticut. To get a good c-4, you need to go to someone who specializes in them and makes others as a side business. Most companies do chevy trannys but can build a c-4. Stay away from them, It'll only leave you with a box of broken parts.

Too bad you dont live in GA, I have a guy that could build you a C4 that could take whatever you threw at it...for under $800!!

I like mine....even though I drove it in another car, its in my 66 now. Its a prepped C4, TCI 3300 stall, reverse manual valve body with transbrake, and a B&M hammer shifter. In a fox chassis the trans went 6.60s in the 1/8th - without the reverse manual valvebody and transbrake.

Do a search for Performance Automatic Transmissions Along with Mighty Might C4s

My C4 hasn't given me a MINUTES problem in over 15 years. I grows some of the most beautiful roses you've ever seen and, in the summer, you can dig fishing worms underneath it.

Being the resident "fossil", I can tell you that my C-4's have been great. I like them. The only annoyance has been that they tend to leak fluid if they aren't "excercised" often.

I've also had numerous C-6's that have served me well.

SD brought up a good point about leaking if they are not run for a while.

Mine leaks during winter storage period. The seals have hardened but soon do these job when the car is driven a bit. It MIGHT leak a quart of ATF over the winter. I'm basically TOO LAZY to replace the front seal when the "fiX" is so simple: DRIVE IT!

yes a C6 will fit, but why would you do that? a properly built C4 will hold up just fine, and it robs less power than a C6.

can't wait to get rid of the c4. it's a nice enough tranny with crisp shifts, and can be built for drag racing. but for my daily driver, i can't wait to drop an AOD and 3.73's in there.

but for drag racing, there's only 1 auto tranny i can think of that's any better: powerglide
