Who's painted there headers???? come on it!!!!

i got a set of brand spankin new fox style Mac 1 5/8's Unequal length shorty headers for my 95 mustang. there uncoated tho. i tryed calling around and everybody who ceramic coats locally is no longer doing it and is stopping.

i dont want to send the headers out to get coated because i want to install them ASAP.

i want to paint them with some Duplicolor 1200' paint that i picked up. it looks really good and almost looks ceramic coated.

i was wondering who has painted headers and what there results were. also what did you do to get it to where it is now?

I used some of the high heat header paint that is supposedly good to 1200 degrees. No discoloration yet. I used the silver kind.

Ive used some of the same stuff you are talking about on my off road h pipe and flows hasnt came off yet. By the way nice headers I have the same ones except in chrome I love them.

how long ago did you paint them?

what were your methods to painting them.


i want to remove the HTS coating to bare metal. sand down the headers. wax and grease remover the whole thing a few times. then spray 4-5 coats and let them dry for about a week in the shack.

I was in a hurry when I painted mine, so they were sandblasted, degreased, and given two coats of paint before they were installed. Left to dry overnight.

Yeah I noticed a difference drop my track time down a little also. Gave a little more throaty sound. You'll like them

Where have you guys bought this paint from... Im very interested... I just sand Blasted my 1. 7/8s kooks headers and would like to paint them as well...

sorry to rain on the parade of the duplicolor 1200* safe paint, but as far as I'm concerned, it IS NOT good choice for painting headers. I got some at my local autozone, stripped the headers down to bare metal w/ a wire wheel. It's been a year and a half, so I'm not exactly sure of the details, but I'm nearly positive I degreased it. I gave it probably 3 coats, letting it dry between coats and put them on. I'd say within one week, it started flaking; now they're all rusted where the paint flaked off.

If you're looking for good high-temp paint, I've heard POR-15 is awesome...many threads on it over the past six months or so, so you might try a search. You can find it on ebay or maybe other internet sites. Here is a quote from an ebay auction (seller=eastcoastchoppersinc) I had saved:

"This auction is for a PINT can of POR-15's Brilliant Aluminum Heat Resistant Paint.

This paint is perfect for your classic car headers, manifolds, or exhaust pipes. It is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1400 F and it resists cracking, chipping, and peeling. You will be excited by its performance and beauty.

For some reason, the auction says POR-15, but the can in the picture says POR-20

In that auction from around January I believe, it was $27.95 for the pint + $6.25 shipping = $34.20, but as they say, you get what you pay for.

*By the way, I am in NO WAY affiliated with POR 15, Duplicolor or eastcoastchoppersinc...just get that out of the way. All of my information is based on personal experience of the Duplicolor and research I've done on POR 15.

ive read some negative results while doing my search on this paint too.

the person on this site used it and sayed to only put a light thin coat on it.

I used the same paint on my H pipe. I just scrubbed it really well with degreaser and a scotch brite pad, then applied about 4 coats of paint. It's only been about a month, but so far it's holding up well.

I've read a number of posts that say John Deere tractor muffler paint is indestructible
on headers.

I tried the duplicolor 1200 degree silver on my headers. It flaked off in a few days. I think you may need to bake/cure the paint shortly after spraying it on. I just used some 2000 degree header paint from Thermotec and it seems to be really on there. I sprayed it on, waited about 15-20 minutes, and started the car and let it idle. (Do this outside ) It smoked like crazy for about 10-15 minutes, then the paint cured. It actually became more shiny (looks ceramic coated almost), stopped smoking, and is really tough. I have only had it on for a few days now, but the duplicolor stuff started flaking the first time it got hot. I didn't bake/cure the duplicolor though, so it may work as well. Hope this helps!

I've had good luck with the high temp exhaust paint. I've done the headers on my car and exhaust manifolds on my old 71 Torino and they held up really well, but neither car was a daily driver though. I had my headers bead blasted before I painted them - the key to having these hold up good in in the prep work and curing the paint according to the directions.

I've had great success with Eastwood Company's stainless steel coating. It's been on my 351C headers for over 6 years without rusting, discoloring or flaking off. I used tremclad high temp paint and it held up really good on my mac headers. It was silver in color.It didn't flake or discolor.

If you don't have to sandblast them, clean them with acitone. Nothing cleans metal quicker. Won't leave a film. Paint will stick good. Will you be driving the car in the winter? Paint will only last so long. Since they are shorties you may get a couple years before the paint is gone.

i dont drive the car in the winter so it should last longer.

after coming home from work today, i removed the paint on one of the headers completly. i started the other header but started to get lazy and now i'm going to have to go over it again.

the game plan is to finish off the other header, clean both of them up and spray them by the afternoon.

i'll get some pics up tommorow.
