Forgive me, but this is going to be very hard to explain without any pictures...

I'm wondering if anyone reading this who's purchased AGR Performance's Ford Rack and Pinion was able to reuse the stock steel insert that the old rack and pinion mounted on. It's what goes through the frame and sticks out about 3 inches for the rack to mount on. The bolt is fed through this insert and then a washer and nut go on the other end to secure the rack. There is almost no play in the bolt if any at all.

The AGR performance Ford rack and pinion comes with polyurethane bushings and a steel insert that goes from one end of the bushing to the other, but not through the frame. I called them and they told me to just use the bolt, and trash the stock insert. I'm worried about way to much play without that steel insert going through the frame. The bolt diameter is about .465 inches, the frame hole without the steel insert is about .76 inches, and the diameter of the steel insert on the agr rack is about .645 inches.

I'm sure I can get it tight to the frame, but it would only be a matter of time before it starts slipping around. I don't want my steering shifting around on me while I'm driving down the road, and I'm sure nobody else would either. Can anybody please help?

Did you ever get this issue resolved? What do you think about the AGR rack after using it? I'm in the market for a rack and was thinking about this one.

Thanks.

I researched the crap out of the AGR rack and the conclusion is, it's not any better than a reman'd one from Pep Boys or any of the online sites. The only TRUE upgrade for our cars is the 2003/4 Cobra rack conversion. It's not that hard to do and can be cheap. At least until Maximum Motorsports get their kits back in stock, the Cobra swap is the best deal.

Now ask me what I did for mine? Yeah, I just used stock new parts for my '93. ;)

You are mistaken.
I've run an agr rack for years, it's nothing like an 03 cobra rack and it's far superior to anything pepboys makes.
I speak from actual experience.

Steering is fast, light and precise.
I run a 12:1 rack, but they don't make it anymore.
Now i think the quickest you can get is 15:1.

Takes a little getting used to because little effort is needed to turn the wheel and they turn so quickly, but once you get used to it not sure you will want it any other way.

As for the OP's issue, i ran mine originally with aluminum offset bushings, and now with my AJE k member that has the steel insert permantly mounted with non offset poly bushings.
Can't remember thinking either way there was an issue.

I'm well aware the OP was done 8 years ago, but at least it proves some people do the right thing and search first.
