Who's the alcoholic?

So there's this guy at work who called me an alcoholic. He said that because I drink to get buzz whenever I drink. I was like, well what other reason would I drink for. I don't like drinking one or two drinks just for the hell of it. If I'm going to take time to drink, I'm going to make it worth it. Then I asked him how often he drank and he said that he has at least one beer everyday. I don't know about you guys, but that's an alcoholic. He denys it cause he says that he doesn't drink to get drunk, like me, but just to relax. My arguement is, that I don't drink everyday, I probably drink once a week, and when I do drink more that once a week, I stay away from it for a while. But I do admit, that everytime I drink, I do TRY to get buzzed, it's just not worth it for me to drink one or two beers for no reason. Who's the alcoholic here?

I am in the same boat as you...I don't drink for the taste, to relax, or whatever BS people make up to justify it...I just drink to get wasted lol. If I stop drinkin before at least 10 beers or so I feel like it was a waste of time. Of course I am in college (for 2 more weeks till I graduate), so once I re-join normal society I doubt I will get quite as destroyed every time.

That's what I thought! I've learned that after graduation, life is pretty much like you're in college, except less people and you actually have money to drink good stuff. There's no more Thirsty Thursdays for me but Friday and Saturday night are just like college.

Uh, no one is the alcoholic. You both go to work everyday and (from what I can tell) both of you are supporting yourselves. What's so alcoholic about that?

I for one have come from a family where my Dad drinks every day of the week. He comes home from work, cuts the grass, drinks, works on cars, drinks. There is NOTHING alcoholic about my Dad (and I couldn't care any less if you think there is). He does it because he wants to, not because he HAS to.

To answer the question, I drink because I like the taste and the feeling of beer/alcohol. I drink probably 6 nights a week, but sometimes I'll only have 2 or 3. If that makes me an alcoholic, then so be it. My 3.3 cumulative GPA is probably better than yours. And, don't be mad at me because I have self control....

I wouldn't consider either of you alcoholics...people have proposed that having a drink everyday is beneficial to your health and you only drink once a week so I don't think anyone in this situation is abusing and becoming dependent on alcohol.

Most alcoholics don't have jobs, stay home an get **** faced whenever possible, first drink when they wake up has some kind of alcohol, etc. In rare instances is an alcoholic successfull.

Now in your scenario neither of you are an alcoholic. I wouldn't get worked up about it.

I'm not worked up about it, I just wanted an opinion. I knew neither of us had a problem with alcohol, but out of both of us, I guess he's more of an "alcoholic" than me.

IEATRICE, I've heard that too, but not with beer, but with whiskey.

Joes95GT, you got worked up and noone even said anything to you. Calm down, have a beer.

I disagree with Vibrant and Joes.

My grandfather held a steady job for over 30 years. He supported his family. He went to work everyday. Paid the bills. Cut the grass, washed the car, all that ****.

But, he had at least 20 drinks everyday over the course of the day. On weekends, he'd have more like 40.

Well, in his mid-60s he needed to have corroded artery surgery. The surgery went well...but he came REAL close to dying in the hospital..why? Alcohol withdrawal. He had to be sedated and tied to the bed because his body's actions were so out of control. He screamed and hallucinated. I was young, and it was very scary to see.

Yeah, he "functioned" as an alcoholic for most of his life- but the fact is, his drinking did harm my family because he NEEDED to do it, and that has it's implications.

Clearly you're an alcoholic, you mexican you!

Nacho, you require 12 corona's to get over this stress....go get drunk STAT!

P.S. Was the guy talking to you a Canadian? That's usually a sure sign of an alcohol problem

people who drink everyday are more likely to become dependent on it.

years ago, my mother started having a martini every evening before dinner. eventually it became 2 martinis. now it is often 3. and she gets sloshed most nights. but she never ever drinks during the day and is not otherwise dysfunctional. is she an alcoholic? it's hard to say because she doesn't fit into the classic mold of the binge drinking, can't stop type of person, but she definately is dependent on it and she would have an extremely difficult time if she decided to not drink at all.

i think if you are dependent on it and would have a hard time if you decided not to do it, then you are probably an alcoholic.

when the statement becomes "I need to get drunk" instead of "I want to get drunk" and this statement is common, not because of extenuating circumstances... you are an ALKI

Nacho, if were are looking for a label then the talk show people would refer to you as a binge drinker......that's their title......I say as long as your not drinking and driving...paying your bills etc then you are fine.....myself having been through AA years ago.....if your "not" waking up and drinking straight Vodka out of the freezer before going to work then don't worry about being an alcoholic....... Good thing you didn't tell him that you "wake and bake"
