Why do people go for the 5lug setup over the stock 4?

Most people like the look. You have a wider array of wheels to choose from (better looking in my opinion). Eventually, it becomes a matter of handling the power. But there probably isn't a single car on this site that HAD to swap because the 4 lug couldn't handle it.

Up until recently, 5-lug big brake kits could be had much cheaper than 4-lug big brake kits. That's one factor. Still, you can do 94+ GT/V6 upgrades for much cheaper than the aftermarket big brake 4-lug kits go for. They're also more readily available than one of the old stock (lincoln, turbocoupe, etc.) setups.

More wheel options is another reason, some like to run rims that only come in 5-lug.

And then some people highly prefer the 5-lug pattern on a 5-spoke wheel over the 4-lug pattern on a 5-spoke wheel.

After that, some people might have another reason and some people might just be snobs

And the 4 lug is extremely suspect once you get above 400 whp on slicks from what I hear. Anyone remember Underpressure GT (Joe) and his 4 lug incident?

Because I'm not spending a lot of time and money on bigger brakes to only be limited in my wheel selection by the 4 lug options.

I want better brakes so Im upgrading to a '94 setup. Better brakes are the only reason Im converting.
I wouldve been fine with the 4 lug Pony wheels otherwise.

Loosing my wheels is what keeps me from going 5lug for the brake upgrade...ah well I don't break that hard anyways

Better wheel selection and you have the ability to run some NICE OEM brakes (the 13"/11.65" Cobra setup) for dirt cheap without having to shell out $3000 for one of those kits.

Tell me where to find these! LOL I'm looking for bigger brakes as we speak, and I'm not willing to shell out the cash for Baer/Wilwood/FMS Cobra R stuff. 2000 for just front rotors/calipers is ridiculous.

Well if you want brand new stuff, check out www.buyfordracing.com

Their cheapest 13" kit is $310 for the Mach 1 kit (what i have on my GT) and it comes iwth new rotors, loaded calipers and SS lines. All you would need then for the front would be the spindles (approx $100/pair) and the adapter for the pass line SS line ($5) and your front conversion is pretty much all set.

Out back they sell the M-2300-M kit for $175. You would also need a pair of 94-98 SN95 axles ($50 or so) and a set of calipers ($200ish new or $50ish used). Toss in some 94-95 rear softlines ($50) and the adapters ($10) and that's the rear conversion.

Then you just need the MC, Booster, 3-2 conversion, prop valve plug and adjustable prop valve and you are good to go. There are other little odds and ends but that's the majority of the Cobra kit. If you go used you can even get it cheaper.

Don't use what i wrote as a guide to the install though, do some research here

that brake kit is a big reason i bought my GT. fully installed with suspension and other quality parts and i got the whole car for $3500 :-D just drove it from north jersey (the very northern tip) to atlantic city and back....did wonderfully

I also bought my car with a suspension upgrade. It has the stock size tires, and they rub on the fenders around sharp turns. Do you think the Cobra setup will fit?

Like said above, spacers caused that. No way in hell I would even think about running spacers.

Most people go for 5 lug because of a larger wheel/ brake selection. They dont switch to 5 lug because the 4 lug is to weak, that has nothing to do with it. The lugs may shear but you guys are talking about snapping axles which isnt caused by the amount of lugs. Pretty sure I've seen 9 second foxes with 4 lug still and 10 second ones for sure, but Iam sure they arent the stock 28 spline axles.

what year is your car and what wheels/tire size are you running? how much is it lowered?

my 89 GT (smaller fender openings than 91-93) with 17x9's and 255/45/17's (taller than what should be on there) is lowered 2 full inches...tucks the top of the tire in the wheelwell...and it just barely rubs on the front fender extension...

why 5 lugs?
