Why can i keep adding timing? Im at 20 deg!

ok, this is wierd, i baselined my engine at 10 deg. and it was running ok, since then ive been slowly addiing timing 2 deg at a time and taking it out for a drive, now im at 20 deg. and everytime i take it out its gets Much more powerful, and no pinging yet...wtf How can this be happining? with my old motor i could barely get to 14 on Premium. Now i have cheap 87 gas, and everytime i jump it it just keeps getting faster!! please help, im not compalining, but WHY?
 
What's the temerature where you live now? That may have something to do with it. If it gets to 100*+ , then the detonation should be more apparent.

From the dyno tests I have seen, 14* is the optimal setting for timing. Going higher/lower should only result in a psychosomatic sense of a power gain.
 
My car always liked 16 degrees of timing. You do have a totally different engine in the car which can probably take more timing somehow. What did ford set the timing to when it came out of the factory for the explorer?
 
have you checked to make sure the puter is advancing timing? you put the spout back in after setting timing? i had to ask. :)
 
JR, that is what i have gathered (some fox guys with blowers do the same). nice alternative to burning a chip.
 
oh yeah? dam! i DO have the spout in ,and im running right around 20 now, 24 had det. Tell me more about removing the spout! what does this affect, will the lower rps still be smooth? i guess i would just set it to where it dont det at high rpm. only think, when its out it idles wierd.
 
Disconnect the spout basically stops the computer from advancing the timing through it's spark tables. If you leave it disconnected, you will have a static timing advance if XX degrees.

This is not optimal for performance, but it is cheap & free.

Letting the computer advance the timing is much better on a NA motor. Once you go blown, you need to make changes.

The EEC also fine tunes the idle speed via spark advance. That's why it's always bouncing around when you shine the light on it with the SPOUT in. So no SPOUT may = crappier idle quality.

i ran 26* fix timing once and the upper rpms just fell on it's face but the mid power was much better but with the spount in the upper rpms advance to like 30* even at 26* i was starting to get some pinging so you may gain low end but you'll lose your top end....the other good thing is you computer can't take timing out between shifts so that helps you a bit too.
