Ok, newb kinda question here. I guess on this site your post count only goes up when you start a thread, unlike some other forums. But I have started 26 threads and my post count has been stuck at 19 for a while.

Post count only goes up if you post in a tech forum.

In talk forums and the lounge it doesn't go up at all.

So our post counts apply only to technical posts

Only posts in the tech sections count.

I don`t know why they even bother having post counts.
Who cares how many posts people have.

Made fun of? Mods have zero tolerance in tech forums. You can let a few slide in tech but it wont take much to get banned.

I dunno either, but to some people it matters. They view post counts as a sort of seniority because to get one that's high, you need to contribute a lot of tech. Someone with 100-200 posts doesn't get taken as seriously as someone with 1000-2000. It's a sort of "the more you have the wiser you must be" mentality.

And no i'm not saying that because I have one of the higher counts on SN

I have alot of posts but most of mine are asking dumb questions or needing help with little projects. Ive been here for a while so they add up, but in no way do I have seniority here, or alot of expierence to give good advice.

In this day and age you already know who contributes and who doesnt, so post count is just a number. Personally Id look more at the people that get the PMs, and IMs asking them for advice or help. Granted we have no idea who gets those, but Id be willing to bet the more wise posters get a lot more (asking questions, not just BSing) PMs and IMs from other members for tech info than the others!

The post count is an indicator... that is all. It indicates your level of involvement with what the site is actually intended to address. Some have a healthier involvement with the actual purpose of this site than others. Some have a good balance going between the Talk and Tech sections. If you've made 1000 posts on this forum but only 2 are in your post count then it fairly obvious that you're here primarily to socialize. Nothing wrong with that.... The socialization sections are here for that purpose.

The post count DOES serve a purpose though. Aside from indicating someone level of involvement in tech, it's also a pretty good indication of an individuals successful involvement in tech. Whether that's asking relevant questions or assisting in providing relevant answers. In 5oh tech for instance... you can often read an individuals reply and judge whether it's crap or not... their post count can help in indicating the credibility of that response if you have no first hand knowledge of the poster personally. Like mentioned above, there's little or no funny business tolerated in Tech... So someone who has 9000+ posts for instance, would not have lasted long enough to make all those posts in tech if all he ever spewed was garbage in those sections.
