A friend of mine is running a naturally aspirated motor with not sure what shorty headers off road h pipe and dynomax flow through mufflers. It sounds like a friggen stock car. Well I went the same route, first off with long tubes shorty x and those mufflers. That sounded like crap. So I decided to go with bbk shorties with bbk x pipe and those mufflers. Still nowhere near the sound of his. We both have heads/cam/intake and I know they all sound different but jesus the difference here is like night and day, and mine isnt the better sounding one?? Anyone have any ideas why??????

its probably the x-pipe. You said he has a H-pipe, which sounds different then the x you have. Change to an H-pipe, and see how it sounds.

Yup...the difference between an X and H pipe are pretty drastic. I think the X pipes sounds really raspy and dont really have that muscly gurgle to them that the H pipes have. The X's do sounds very racy and absoutely scream at WOT but just have avery diff sound than the H. Maybe thats your problem. Also long tubes sound a little different from shorties. good luck man.

Also is one of you running cats and the other not running cats, because that can make a huge difference in sound. Maybe you want to consider a pro chamber....thos sound pretty sick...lata

i think its impossible to have a crappy sounding mustang with any muffler setup as long as its lead with a off road hpipe. i love the sound 5.0s have with them, so bad ass....almost arousing

friend of mine lives about a block from this guy with a o/r hpipe and dumps. i can hear him start his car up and pull away through the woods.

they can also be a very good deterrant. a good high rev of your car and most ricers won't even look over to see WTF it was that made that sound!

I remember sitting 3 deep in my friends 89 5.0, trick flow intake, headers, off road h, flows and dumps etc etc. he pulled up next to this kid in a honda with a real loud fart pipe, vvvoooommmmmm vvvvoooooooom, he revs on us. by this time im in the back seat laughing. friend in the passenger yells "wanna run'em?" (now i am laughing real hard, at the sound of that fart can, and at what this kid was doing with his hands like he was throwin sign language up..i dunno wtf it was but i was laughing hard). kid nods, so my friend revs a few times 4-5k revs, and the look on this kids face was priceless...the look you get from someone who has never heard a mustang with a offroad h and dumps, the...WTF look (you know what i mean ) . anyways we run him and blow his doors off, 3 deep haha. and my friend the driver is a heavy guy too lol.

i got headmen shorty headers, bbk h-pipe, and american thunder flowmasters. Sounds nice and pretty quiet till you get on it. Anyways gotta bunch of kids around here who can afford exhaust so they get there mufflers cut out. drives me friggin crazy. Sounds like crap no matter what they got . Then theres this kid who put an x-pipe on with his mufflers cut out. Sounded horrible, and they think this is cool

Ever think of changing out your MUFFLERS? I personally don't like the dynomax bullets (the straight through resonator).

Magnaflow magnapacks sound badass (resonators too).

Hell Yeah. I'm rocking the ProChamber. The thing has THE BEST sound, a nice H-pipe bass at idle and part throttle, and a screamingly loud race car sound at WOT. I want some meaner mufflers to accentuate it, I think when I get my Cobra rear bumper and need a new catback that I am gonna get Spintechs, those sound sweet.

As for mufflers, do this....

Get some used Flowmasters for as cheap as you can find'em. They should be in "weldable" condition, but they dont have to be perfect or like new.

Cut them in half. No i'm not kidding.

Cut the back half of the muffler off. It helps if you know a little about the internals of a Flowmaster muffler so that you know where the baffles are.
Then take the back plate/out pipe and weld it back onto the front half like it was originally made.

You're basically making a home made single chamber Flowmaster, in a way.

My friend has'em on his '86 and they sound sicker than any muffler i've ever heard. I can only imagine what they'd sound like with LTs and a Pro Chamber...
