Why doesn't anyone use the AFM PMS?

It seems to have a less steep learning curve than a Tweecer and doesn't require a laptop. Is the tweecer more powerful than this or is it price that keeps people away?

The tweecer seems to be more in depth than the PMS unit. Also, the $400 difference in "new" unit price is a big factor. I will most likely end up going with the tweecer.

My friends who are starting their own performance shop are using one. One big problem is that you can't control the tune from off idle to 2000rpm. They said its great for a WOT drag car, but a little more difficult with a daily driver.

From what I've seen of the PMS in various threads, it does look like a great way to tune for wot or max power and it looks like its more user friendly than the Tweecer.

Not sure but I've seen others say it doesn't have quite as much flexability as a Tweecer when trying to deal with drivability issues.

It has been out for a while now so you should not have probs getting detailed info on what all it really can do.

I am new to tuning and use the pms. would recommend it to anyone who has little or no experience. Get the uego 1000 wideband meter and datalog software and have fun. I love being able to do my own tuning, The pms is the best investment I have made thus far.

tweecer is better for people running autos. You can change the line pressure, shift points, etc. PMS you can not.

im lost with this tunning stuff what is the pms and what can i do with it .iwould like to know cause i plan on doin alot to my motor wheni get back from iraq and tuning it would be nice to do. someone said u need a laptop ?eplain for the slow guy in the group if u have a site i can look at one that would be great

you need a laptop if you want to play with the functions of your car in the car. you could do it from your home PC too though.
The PMS kinda looks like a gameboy and it stays in the car. It is a piggyback style and has to stay hooked up.

I'm using the PMS unit, and love it. The only thing is, I'm running a AUTO... and I can't adjust shift points, etc. with it. So, this means I'll have to get a baumannator to change that.

Besides that, it is awesome to tune with. Very easy to understand and use. Plus, most dyno's i've talked to know how to use the PMS unit now, vs. the twEEcer.

One other plus, you do not need a laptop in your car to tune it on the run. You just have this small "gameboy" like unit to control.

I've read before that you can't turn off the egr with pms but you can with the tweecer, if you have taken out the egr.

Sorry, I didn't feel like starting a new thread so I'm hijacking this one since we're on the tweecer-pms subject... so I've got a few questions of my own:

So when you hook up a pms system to make changes you have to the pms system hooked up from then on?

Can you get rid of the shift retard with the tweecer? you know how our computers retard the timing when you shift? can you turn that off?

With the tweecer, if you don't know how to adjust anything and you've done HCI on your car and it doesn't run that great, can you load a A9l or a Cobra file to your computer instead of actually swaping the computers physically, to kinda band-aid the problem?

Sorry for the newbie questions. I'm actually leaning to tune my car on my own instead of having it dynotuned, incase I change my combo down the road. Thanks.

There is a small box that you have to keep hooked up all the time. It can fit under your passenger seat. The controller can be hooked up or not depending on how much you like to change your tune, etc. Make sense?

Here is the thing about drivability problems.

Lots of times, what is causing the prob could be one or the other, example ... is it too lean or too rich ... but you don't know, so ... you datalog for some data to see what is going on. Some of the time, that same drivability prob could be a combination of a couple of things but again you don't know for sure so ... you datalog.

Datalogging gives you hard data for two very important things
1) A Baseline or place to start
2) Verification that your change was correct or at least you will be able to see that your on the right path to solving the prob. In my case, some of the time, I see that I'm doing the right thing but going in the wrong direction

Another thing about drivability probs is:

To fix em, you gotta have access to the values in the pcm

Just wanted to throw that out for peeps to think about cause without hard data ... I don't know how you could make the adjustments needed which can really help slay those drivability dragons.

About your Tweecer Q's

Yes, you can kill the shift retard with the Tweecer

You can't and would not want to load the Fox pcm stuff in your original pcm
You can load the Cobra file in your original pcm

Yes, self tuning gives you the most options but if you go with the Tweecer, you gotta teach yoursesf the basic operation of how your pcm works. Its really not as bad as most think ... Just read old threads and ask a few Q's and it will start to make sense after a while.
