Well, I've searched a good amount and figured I wasnt going to find anyone that has had this strange of a problem.

Here's the story: Did my ignition system about a month ago, MSD coil and 6AL box...everything fine. Put MSD Pro-Billet distributor in a week later. I take the car out for a test drive immediately after install, getting on the throttle a GOOD amount. Pull into the driveway, see smoke coming out of the hood. Open the hood, coolant spurting everywhere out of the overflow. Look at temp gauge...almost 240!!!! For about a week after that, every time I would drive the car, the temp would climb normally to about 150, and then jump...I mean literally FLY up to 230-240. Then it would sometimes fall to about 190, just to climb again in what seems like 15 seconds, over and over, at idle, in heavy traffic, and less drastically at highway cruising. Now, I replaced the thermostat about 2 months ago (180 degree super Stant), and put on a chrome housing, so I'm guessing the thermostat not opening wasnt the problem. It finally stopped overheating, and everything went back to normal. The problem has resurfaced this past week.

In addition, before I put the distributor in I was getting almost 16 mpg city. Afterwards (and during the overheating problem), I was getting less than 12.5. It climbed back up to 15.5 once the overheating stopped, but now that it's back, it seems as though I'm getting way less MPG once again.

Perhaps these two things arent related in any way. However, I'm friggin sick of this all happening at $3 a gallon. Any help would be MUCH appreciated.THANKS!!!!

Most likely, your timing if off. Check it and see what it's set to. If you have locked timing setup should be 32-35 or 8-12 on a regular setup. Also check your air/fuel ratio. Do you have a electric fan setup? How many CFM's is it pushing? Stock radiator?

It sounds like since you had been messing with the dizzy, perhaps your timing is jacked up somehow. I assume since the vehicle seems to be running alright other than the overheating, that you stabbed the dizzy correctly.. but it sure sounds like either it's way advanced (which you'd probably notice from pinging,) or you somehow developed a huge air bubble.

I say check your timing first. Then, check your coolant level just to be sure, and burp it.

Timing is dead nutz.

I will flush coolant this weekend, I'm due anyway. Perhaps some useful info: the coolant reservoir/overflow bottle is reading correctly. In other words, the coolant level is at the hot line when the engine is hot, at cool line when the engine's cool. Maybe this doesn't matter since it's just overflow? Also, why would this be happening almost 2 months after I messed with the coolant system (t-stat replacement)?

Killer50stang, no elec fan, new radiator. Would the only way to check air/fuel be to use a gauge?

Also, would a bad ECT or vacuum leak have anything to do with the overheat, or gas mileage for that matter? How about an old fuel filter (for the gas mileage)?

Thanks alot guys, already a possible solution. I appreciate you taking your own personal time to help me out.

I'd get a better fan, zirgo's are awesome and cheap!! (3300 cfms)

Well, a gauge would help you, unless you're the master at sound if it's rich or lean. What is your timing set to? Does it get hot at idle? If it's getting hot at stop and go points, I'd say it your fan. If it's getting hot right away since you changed the dizzy...it's timing.

do people even read?? I already said this once.

First startup on my motor the timing was way retarded.. and i must say the headers on that thing got so hot in a very short amount of time actually causing one of my spark plug wires to catch fire and screwed up my clutch cable.

Pretty sure timing is fine, but I will recheck tomorrow morning. Also will flush coolant.

PULLED CODE 31 THIS MORNING. JRickhker (I know you're lurking somewhere :D ), I've read your excellent diagnostic advice for this code, and before you waste time posting it for my lame problem, I thank you ahead of time for your help :nice: . Is there anyway to avoid all that testing and just start replacing stuff? EGR Valve, solenoid??

Thanks guys. I will let you know how things go tomorrow. I am checking the ECT and ACT resistance as well, and checking for vacuum leaks on anything that is made of rubber :D
