Well, I've searched a good amount and figured I wasnt going to find anyone that has had this strange of a problem.
Here's the story: Did my ignition system about a month ago, MSD coil and 6AL box...everything fine. Put MSD Pro-Billet distributor in a week later. I take the car out for a test drive immediately after install, getting on the throttle a GOOD amount. Pull into the driveway, see smoke coming out of the hood. Open the hood, coolant spurting everywhere out of the overflow. Look at temp gauge...almost 240!!!! For about a week after that, every time I would drive the car, the temp would climb normally to about 150, and then jump...I mean literally FLY up to 230-240. Then it would sometimes fall to about 190, just to climb again in what seems like 15 seconds, over and over, at idle, in heavy traffic, and less drastically at highway cruising. Now, I replaced the thermostat about 2 months ago (180 degree super Stant), and put on a chrome housing, so I'm guessing the thermostat not opening wasnt the problem. It finally stopped overheating, and everything went back to normal. The problem has resurfaced this past week.
In addition, before I put the distributor in I was getting almost 16 mpg city. Afterwards (and during the overheating problem), I was getting less than 12.5. It climbed back up to 15.5 once the overheating stopped, but now that it's back, it seems as though I'm getting way less MPG once again.
Perhaps these two things arent related in any way. However, I'm friggin sick of this all happening at $3 a gallon. Any help would be MUCH appreciated.THANKS!!!!
