I am going to convert my `66 6cyl over to a 302 and 5-lug.I can get a `67 rearend drum-drum pretty cheap, but will t fit the `66 easily? I heard that it might be a lil wider, but would that be wider overall,or are the spring perches wider also?

The 65-66 spring perches are the same distance apart as the 67-70 Stangs. I pulled a 57-59 Ford 9" rear out from under a 66 Stang and bolted it right under a 67 Stang, no problem. 12sec67 was correct. All the early Stangs , Fairlanes, Torino's, Comets, Mavericks, and other mid size cars shared the same spring perch spacing.

The 67-70 rear is 2 inches wider than the 65-66 rear. Spring perches are the same spacing. Like I posted earlier, I pulled a 57-59 Ford 9" from a 66 Stang, and stuck it under a 67 Stang. Only problem was the larger diameter axle tubes. Had to get new U-bolts, and the Lakewoood Traction bars took care of the spring plate issue with the larger U-bolt spacing. Another option on the 65-66 is using an 8" rear from a 75-79 Granada/Monarch, they also bolt into the early Stangs.

I installed an unmodified 9" rear out of a 68 Cobra Jet Mustang into my 66 Fastback. The spring perches are a perfect fit. However, all 67->up 8" and 9" rears have a slightly larger tube dia at the spring perches than the 65/66 Mustangs. This means you need larger U-bolts (2 7/8") and spring/shock plates from a 67->up Mustang. Mustangs Unlimited listed those parts in their catalog for around $50 a pair. I compensated for the 1" (per side) extra width by using wheels with 1" greater backspacing. In my case, I had a new drivshaft made because the 9" rear center section had a longer U-joint yoke. If you're using an 8" rear, the U-joint may not be an issue.

Rodger to the spring perch spacing, but wouldn't the extra 1" of width on each side cause the tires to rub against the inside lip of the wheel well radius?

I know the 67-70 9-inch is a larger tube than the 65-66 9-inch, it did not have the dramatic taper the early ones did. But are you sure that is also true of the 8-inch?

I just dropped my 67 8-inch out to replace with a 9, so I've got one on the floor in my garage if you need measuring (or pricing :D).

I have a friend with an unmodified 9" from a 69 mach one in his 65 coupe. Fit perfect. He is selling it to me...yay.

Unless you're running the newer style rims, it will look stupid. The more narrow 65/66 rears look fine under the wider 67/up, but the wider rear from the 69 will cause your tire to protrude outside the fender wells, unless you have very skinny tires. One other problem...can you say fender rub?

Trust me on this... I've been there....more than once.

BTW... can you e-mail me about your powdercoating services. I just live up in Columbus. [email protected]
