Will a 285/45/17 tire fit?

Will a 285/45/17 tire fit on a stock 1997 17" rim and will it fit on a 1991 GT?
I bought these tires for a good price and my friend said they would fit, but they look to wide for the rim and for the car too.

How wide is the rim?

No, they will not fit inside of the wheel well without modification.

255 is about as wide as it goes and even then, some pounding and bending may be required.

Thats what i thought too. Dosen't look like a lot of room for the 245 thats on there now. Thanks for the info.

I got 275-40 -17 on in the back on a 8.5" rim. I had to space out the kicker shocks a little though. Other than that I had no problems and my car is also lowered.
