Will a 66 toploader work in a 67

[BDT 1967]

I just found a toploader 4 speed out of a 66 289. I would like to know if it will work in my 67 and bolt up with out a problem. HEHBW 015157. is the id numbers.

alright i just read in my mustang monthly that it will work this is a good thing. What i dont understand is, if a close or wide ratio is better for a small block.

Affirmative on the toploader switch. I am in the middle of a '67 to '66 toploader switch (just different clutch pedals, z-bar, etc).

As for the wide vs close ratio - you can use either. Close ratio give you a first gear that is closer (ratio) to the second gear (the actually size has been posted on this forum somewhere).

Make sure you get a toploader for a small block vs big block, if its going in a 289.

As to which is better ( close vs wide) Close works better with rear gears in the 3.70-410 range. Wide is better with 2.75-3.50's. Close ratio has a 2.32 1st gear, wide has a 2.78 1st.

Thanks, That is just the info that I needed, This is a show car and dispite my friends best efforts to run this car to its potential, It will never see the track.

You've got it wrong still Wide works good on street and strip. But also depends on the rear gears. Close is more of a "road race" transmission.
