This can be hard or easy. What do you want to do with it?

If you don't have the key, it can be a m@TH#$ to get the lock cylinder out. Suggestions:

Try every Ford key you can find. If you can get one the turns the lock to on, then push the release pin and take the lock cylinder out. Either through it away, or take the pins out so any key will work it. This works, but is a security risk.

If you need a key, go to a parts store and get a new lock cylinder and key to install.

If you can't get the lock to turn, the official Ford fix is to drill down the center of the keyway with a 1/2 in drill until you drill off the shaft piece that sticks out the end. Then remove the cylinder.

Clean it up and then get a new lock Cylinder.

The spare key trick worked on my 84 parts car, but did not work on my 86 Turbo Coupe donor.

Thanks rd.....you just answered my question.....I'm gonna wait for one that has a key and one that I know that I know tilts.......they(89 tilt in good shape) just seem hard to come by...or Im just not looking hard enough.

Yes thats a tilt column I can tell from the 1st pic...non tilt wheels are not very common among our year cars 1987-93...My opinion is to get the column if you need it...instead of taking the cylinder out take it to a locksmith shop they will cut a new key for that lock for about $15 and about 15 minutes..I had to do it to my 83 stang because the previous owner couldnt find the keys for it...dont get a mobile locksmith it will cost more just bring it to them.try www.mpsautosalvage.com or do a search for mustang parts specialties they will definetly have a surround for it for like $20....hope this helps ya

MPS has a tilt column with surround and key for $50. I am thinking about converting my 93 to tilt. My steering wheel is getting nasty and the air bag is out of commission so why not convert it. How big of a pain in the a** is it to put a new column it?
