I was going to take out my K&N from my stock airbox to clean it, and put in the old stock filter in the mean time.. Then I said wait a minute, why not just put in the filter without that restrictive looking airbox. I rigged it in with the stock airbox clamp, and it holds in fine. Anyone ever done this? Is this a bad idea? Will the filter burn/catch fire or somthing?

See pic for the setup. I haven't driven like this yet, because I want to make sure its safe before I test it out.

Thanks guys!

Probably won't catch fire, but you'll lose probably 5-10 hp from sucking in all that hot air from the engine compartment. It's sort of like those "open element CAI" .. they're crap.

you'll lose 5-10 from all the hot air? are you even serious?

Yeah dude, 'cause inside the engine it's like 32F.
no. same reason you don't get hp from a cai you won't lose hp because you don't have a rubber thing that is just there as a silencer...

once you take off the snout off the silencer it has almost no purpose

What?

The open element is a bad idea as not only do you get hot air, dropping power, but you can get some fan wash (not as big a deal as it used to be on the 5.0's) which will cause the MAF to read incorrectly.

Well, obviously you haven't paid much attention to the CAI studies which are floating all over the Internet. 1hp for every 10 degrees.. sound familiar?

I have a question... How does tarch have so many posts and of those thousands, have any even made sense???
why don't you spend a couple days reading them and see if they make sense

lol

yeah it doesn't make that big of a difference to have the filter open like that... and not even CLOSE to 5-10hp... lol...

sucking hot under the hood air will cost you power. colder the air the more oxgen in that same volume of air. the oxgen is what the engine needs for combustion. so why does it not make sense too some of you guys that air over 180 degrees under the hood is not as good as 80 degree air.

You would have a faster car when you first start driving, but once the car gets hot it will drop a few HP....however at the track if you pull the head light you will gain some HP. i would try and cut the stock piece to where the front and more of the side closest to the fender is open, but the side facing the engine is still in place, acts as a heat shield. you can leave some of the top there so it will shield the intake from hot air more.

I tried that with mine, I made a few base runs with my G-tech Comp., then did what you did, only I used the filter from my CAI, reset the EEC, went for a cruise so the EEC can relearn, then made 3 passes with the G-tech. and avg. the times/mph.

I repeated this procedure with the FIPK CAI, Mac CAI and with a K&N in the stock airbox and finally with stock airbox K&N with no snorkle. Then put the stock airbox w/snorkle back on to retest my baseline run.
Conclusion?

This was before my headswap, haven't had chance to retest after the swap[as it took me a whole friggen day!!]

Went for a drive, and really got on it a few times.. I think the accleration is improved. My biggest concearn is the VERY hot radiator hose which is like a centimeter away from the filter.. if they make contact, it may burn the paper filter.

Not to worry, the heater hose won't get hot enough to burn the paper filter. If it did, the rubber would start to melt. :D

That is what I did and my car didn't slow down, actually before I was averaging 14.1x's and now I am averaging 13.85x's (I also installed a FR aluminum DS and a Dragon P @ P intake elbo.
