Wiper noise: Motor or transmission?

My wipers are horribly loud, but I can't tell if it is the motor or wiper transmission.

I was thinking of lubing the transmission first, seeing if that quiets things down, then replacing the motor if needed. I am not all that picky about how my car sounds....but the two things that drive me nuts are the wipers and my dash "squeek". I know what the problem with the dash is....but I have to fix my wipers before I go nuts.

Get some felt tape (BSR tape) for the dash squeek.

I think the wipers are just generally loud on these cars. Or at least the 3 that I have owned were. I kind of like the noise though..?
