Wiring Guru's Fuel Pump Problem

For some reason nobody sells a 20g fusable link...went to 3 or 4 places and the best I could do was a 16g fuseable link....Hopefully I'm not harming anything by doing this but that's as close as I can get. Needless to say, I change the fueable link and the fp kicked right on. Thanks Hissin.
A 15 amp blade fuse or 15 amp glass fuse would do in place of the fuse link.

Am I harming anything by leaving in the 16g fuseable link in as the replacement ? I mean I do have a fuse holder and blade fuse lying around if you think I should change it out...If what I have is ok I'll just keep that.

I'd rather use the fuse in that case bud. I didnt want to guess at a fuse size last night (it was best to wait for JR's reply). I would have guessed for you to use a 20 amp fuse like the 94-95's use, which sounds like it would have been a little fat.

But given how you can't get the right fusible link, I'd do the fuse and fairly quickly, especially since something caused the link to burn the first time (this might not be unlike having a 10 amp fuse blow in the fusebox and replacing it with a 20 amp fuse. We know better than to do that).

JR will have the final say and sage advice about this though.

Glad to hear this was indeed the fix though. :nice:

Some more info to help out...

Choose the fuse according to the wire size. The diagram I have shows the fuel pump power feed wiring is 14 gauge.

Wire size current table:
18 gauge wire = 5-8 amps
16 gauge wire = 10-12 amps
14 gauge wire = 15-17 amps
12 gauge wire = 20-25 amps
10 gauge wire = 30-40 amps
8 gauge wire = 50-60 amps.

Keep in mind that the wire size in the chart is for the circuit itself, not the size of the fuse link. The packages of fuse link repair material you can get at the auto parts stores also will have a current rating on them.

See http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=7 for some excellent tips of soldering wires for best electrical performance.

Thanks for all the info guys, very helpful as always... When I bought the fusable link the current rating is nowhere on the package or link iteslef. I asked the people at the parts store (keep in mind this was a very knowledgeable store) and they didn't even have an answer to that ? and basically stumped everyone there. He actually called the company to find out however they did not return his call. Not sure how they can sell some of these w/o ratings but they do.

Jrichker: do you happen to know the current ratings for 16g and 18g fusible link? Just out of curiosity since were on this topic.
