My original power wires were looking great too before i did my swap, then one day the stock splice caught fire, Got myself a 3G from the Zone, and never looked back. Easy peasy to do, and the end result looks a lot better.

The green/red wire does 2 things:
1.) It tells the regulator to turn on and supply power to the alternator field winding. The field winding is an electromagnet that helps the alternator convert rotary motion into electricity.
2.) When the alternator output voltage is low, it provides a ground to make the alternator warning light on the dash turn on.
The yellow/white wire is the voltage sense wire that tells the regulator how much voltage drop is in the black/orange wire so that it can increase the voltage to overcome the loss in the wiring.
