I have a 1994 Mustang GT that has a leaking rear-main seal. It leaks maybe a quarter-sized drop every couple of days. How hard is this to fix? Can I do it my self? How much $$$ would this repair cost? Thanks in advanvce!

The rear main seal itself is easy. Getting to it is the pain in the arse. It will be a time consuing job, if you have the tools, knowledge and place to do it then go for it. I don't have a clue what a garage would charge

1993SSP called it. Changing the seal itself takes maybe 5 minutes, but it's the process of pulling the transmission first that makes it a pain. Worse if you have an AOD since they're so heavy, but it can be done in a couple of hours if you're determined enough.

You need a large garage floor, a friend to help you out and then all of the tools to pull everything listed above. It'll take you and a buddy a couple hours and maybe a few drinks to get the job done.

I'll be installing a Centerforce DF clutch sometime this year. That will be the prefect moment to change out my leaking rear seal.

Ill trade you... you do my heater core and ill swap your rear main!!

its so simple!! all you have to do is go to the parts store and ask them if they have any "Engine honey" tip the bottle upside down and you'll know why its called that.. that should fix it till you feel like pullin the tranny... oh and btw... when you do it go ahead and replace the clutch you wont want to do it it again

Wait until you blow the clutch to fix it. A quarter size spot every couple days is nothing. It won't drip on the clutch too much at that rate. If you plan on having a shop do it, definitely don't waste your money. They are going to charge you as much in labor as they would for a clutch. Might as well get it all done at the same time.

I kinda agree with 5.0 Nos on this one. There is a decent chance the new RMS will leak too, so I would not make a special trip in there just to replace it and hope it is a little better. With those miles, your clutch should be ready to come out at some point soon. Then renew the clutch assembly, resurface flywheel, do the RMS, pilot bearing, check the pivot and fork, input bearing retainer, etc (a good once over).

Just MHO. Good luck.
