Just thought I'd share:
I took a small highway trip of about 75 miles today to visit a local Mustang shop and get the scoop on the place. I made a vow to myself to behave and try to maximize highway fuel economy...I wanted to see what it'd do if I was "good". When I was within spitting distance of the highway, I filled the GT with a couple of clicks of the pump and set off. At first I loped along at 110KPH (about 68MPH) and then, as I saw I was becoming something of a pylon to other traffic, sped up to 120KPH (75MPH) and stayed largely in the slow lanes, resisting temptation to get on it. Kept her on the cruise as much as possible and when passing did so with as little additional throttle as I could...you know, trying to keep my foot out of it. I kept the AC off and since it was stinkin' hot out, I kept the windows down. I even got stuck in a jam that lasted perhaps 10 minutes...idling, accelerating, braking, never getting out of 2nd gear.
When I hit the off-ramp, I found the first available gas station and tanked up again. The thing took 8.927L (2.358 US gallons) to go 119.1KM (74.4375 miles). This worked out to an amazing (to me) 31.6MPG highway mileage ... in my Mustang.
I didn't think the car had this in it. I was amazed. I recall taking my other car, a 2002 Volkwagen GTI 1.8T, on the highway recently and driving somewhat "harder" (140KPH -- 87MPH -- average, little cruise control use, using the boost to get around slower traffic etc) and getting "only" 30MPG then. If I drove it as gently as I did the Mustang I'm sure it'd get mid 30s at least but still...31MPG highway out of the MGT!
I have to assume my few simple bolt-ons have actually helped fuel economy if the car is driven with eye toward maximizing efficiency.
What sort of highway MPG do you guys get when the car is driven "responsibly"?
