ok my car was pinging for like 6 weeks in hot weather only...well after much frustration I found that my MAF wires were dirty so I cleaned them and for two days it ran great even when it got over 90 degrees outside using 87 octane....but today in 83 degree weather it did it again using 92 octane!!!??? any ideas what could be to blame?

I cleaned the k&n a few weeks before the problem began or before i noticed it that is....cause it was spring and not hot at that time
i think that is what Scott is getting at - the oil in the gauze can travel upstream and soil the MAF wire. or if you knew that and that was your point with that post, i apologize. it's late and im tired.

i would recheck the MAF again for fun. gauze elements allow bigger microns of dirt through - couple that with a smidge of oil, and your wire is dirty again.

good luck.

Just had a thought. Maybe the time it didn't ping was a complete fluke? Just a random thought.

It took two good cleanings of my MAF, replacing my ECT/IAT/TPS/fuel filter & 2 treatments of seaform cc cleaner to get my car to stay ping free. It's been good up to 100* heat. I haven't really nailed it yet at 110* + yet. So you may need to replace some of the above parts to stay ping free. In the end, it took another thorough cleaning of the MAF to completely elleviate the pinging, but my guess is one of the above parts was partly to blame also.

The first time I attempted to stop my pinging problem I ONLY cleaned the MAF. It had absolutely no affect. I then replaced the above parts & cleaned my k&n filter. That didn't help. Then I cleaned my MAF again, and voila, no pinging. By re-oiling & cleaning my k&n, a tiny amount of oil may have been present on the MAF wires; Which in the end was resolved by cleaning the MAF again.

And I mean a good cleaning. I sprayed carb cleaner on one side of the q-tip, cleaned the left base post, went to the other side of the q-tip, sprayed carb cleaner on the other side of the q-tip, and cleaned the opposite side of the same left base post.

So at least 1 q-tip for each base post, one for each side of each maf wire. Then a few more to go all around. Make sure there is no cotton fibers left over when you are done.

I think I went through 15 q-tips. I know it may seem a little anal, but in the end it worked and I am ping free, for now.

Lets says their is a problem with filter getting the maf dirty, or that the problem is due to the maf in some way....if I bought a CAI kit would this deal with this issue?
i believe it is a problem from the oil in the gauze filter. i would surmise that if we could find some guy, somewhere in the world, still running a paper element, he would say he does not clean his MAF as often as the gauze-filter users do. so to answer your question, i think it is a side effect of the K & N (and its oil), not an issue with the MAFS.

good luck.
