x pipe or h

im purchasing a set of fms shorties and a flowmaster american thunder catback for my 90 5.0...which would be better to match up with it ..h pipe or x? and which brand of either fits best.

Do a search first off........this question is a constant thing

First off, what sound do you want?

A H-pipe will give you the classic musle car rumble
A X pipe will give you a ranchy Race car sound

don't make the choice based on power..... they're both so close together that dyno imprecision would account for any difference they make in hp.

Make your choice as stated above by sound.

I have a x and and h pipe and I have magnaflow mufflers and flowmasters
I like the sound of the flows with the H pipe and the magnaflows seem to work(sound better) with the x....just one man's opinion

iam in the same boat as u criminal. i too have a 90 5.0 w/american thunder c/b waiting to go on.and i am also going to get the fms shorties.
i just can't figure what i like the most . h or x pipe. i feel that the x pipe has more of a nascar sound with chambered mufflers and agree with the other guys that the h has more of a musclel car sound. h/p power diff? there is none as far as i am concerned. it is about what sound u like better.

if it helps any i am kind of leaning towards Pypes catted x b/c the cats are real small and only weigh 2.5lbs. i found them on ebay for 300 shipped from Blue Oval Industries. i happen to love a nascar sound myself (but hate nascar.go figure.) go to mustangexhaust.com. find the clip that has the dr.gas x pipe and shorty headers with the 2 chamber flows. see if u like it. it is under the 79-95 mustangs.

My opinion only...the x-pipe has better scavenging of gases.

If your going with an off road pipe then it depends what you want in sound. I have a catted x and you really cant tell the difference between it and a catted H.

H for a deep rumble and an X for a raspy, nascar sound. I went from an o/r H with flows dumped to an o/r X with race bullets. The X is a little different at first but I love it now. As 88gt stated before, I believe the X better scavenges the exhaust.

H pipe has the deep sound X pipes get LOUD nascar use them on the cars. please dont do what i did run 3" exhuast with x pipes and dumps man that is loud. any one now where i can just get 3" tail pipes???????

ive bought a 90gt 5.0 a couple months back and im vary happy with the sound of the O/R X-pipe with flowmasters... i have a sound clip and idle to about 35oo rpm, pics included too... its a win win situation... ive heard the H pipe and the streight pipe... its all about what you want to hear everytime you start your car....

Right now my car has long tubes, off road X and flowmasters dumped, but sounds horrible. I think its from the dumped flows, but I personally hate the spund. There is no tone its just a resonence off the ground, and is really deep. Even when revved with the X pipe it still doesnt get raspy, just stays mellow and deep. Tails would definately change this, and probably sound pretty good, but as it sits, sounds horrible!

Should pretty much be a one-size-fits-all sort of affair, for the most part. I'm of the weird minority that believes multi-piece H's and X's are the way to go, since they're far easier to install/adjust, but some folks will insist on the old-school one-piece units - fine and dandy by me if they're built right, but I've heard far too many of 'em come shipped weird so that a lot of bending/banging/cussing/modding is needed to make the suckers fit on there at all.

MAC has a multi-piece unit with ball-and-socket type flanges on the downpipes connecting to the H crossover - something like that would be my recommendation. My Jeg's X-pipe has a similar concept, except it just uses slip-and-clamp fittings instead of the nicer ball-and-socket deal (and, because of that cheaper design and the ultra-cheap clamps it came with, it leaks like mad ... grrrrr).

Whatever you get, just make darned sure your H-pipe has tranny crossmember hangers on it. It's usually the X-pipes that sometimes don't come with the hangers - yeah, it's easier to install, but the darned thing sags and drags in about a week - but I'd imagine some H's might not have them, either. You might be able to cheat and get away with having one hanger, but I wouldn't recommend lopping one or both of 'em off just to make the bolt-up process easier.

jus so you know, if you buy the american thunder catback, it says they are 40 series 2 chambered mufflers which they are but they are NOT the 40 series originals.

they are both 40 series.the only diff is that the american thunders have the delta flows in them. the original 40's don't. i have the am/th on mine now. they are deeper than the regular 40's i had on my 94. no diff in power that i am aware of.one just has a small deflector in it,which makes it sound alittle deeper.

With Flows ..... H-pipe.

I love the sound of X pipe's, but IMO, they just don't sound right with Flows in the picture. I'll even say this ..... I don't think very many "chambered" mufflers will sound good with an X. Just my .02.
