a. this thread isnt about endurance
b. soccer is a sissy sport

I'd say MLS soccer and lots of pro soccer in general seems very sissy because they take dives and exaggerate, much as they do in other sports, only worse. But, you can easily have a lot of pain from soccer collisions, either head to head from an attempted header, or the more common knee to knee impact like I had last year. That being said, it is probably the easiest sport in the world to play skill-wise, and that's why it's the most popular.

Of the two, Ice hockey by far.

but most ex football players have most of their teeth.

Hockey.. 80+ games a season, 3-4 games a week.

Football... what, 18 games? 1 game a week.

1 game of football takes more of a physical toll on your body than 1 week of hockey. If you played behind my offensive line, make that 1 half of football :notnice: Football is more physically demanding, hands down.

That said, hockey takes more overall skill/coordination to play. Hell just learning to skate w/o busting your ass is a feat for most people. Hockey players do it very well while playing a sport that requires great hand/eye coordination.

A lot of people want to give the endurance edge to hockey, but when you take into consideration constant line changes, and the fact you are on skates, i think its pretty even. Even with the break between plays, sustained drives take a toll on you, especially when you are hitting every play.

I love both sports, btw.

Hockey. You have to be able to skate and you have to be able to use the stick at the same time. Hitting a baseball is tough but not everyone on the team bats or hits the ball every time either, so...

All specific-for-each things aside, like getting hit, injuries, etc., at the BEGINNING of the day all you need to be able to do for football is run, catch and throw a ball. Obviously it takes more and I'm not putting it down, but not everyone can just jump into a game of hockey like they can football (i'm talking a pickup/for fun game here, not a pro game - LOL)

Just my opinion. For endurance I'd say soccer or maybe basketball is king, easily. Probably soccer. In hockey you bust ass, but at least you have quick shifts.

Football gets my vote... I know too many people that play pickup hockey that couldn't even think about stepping on a football field, unless they were playing powder puff.

53-74-43, Hut, Hut... Oh crap do I pull right or left... BAMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!! That's what would happen to a hockey player.

I think the actual ABILITY to do so is in question, not the understanding and implementation of the game and tactics. You don't just go out and skate wherever in hockey either, ya know. Basically run/throw/catch vs. skate/handle a puck. Skating is the part most people just can't do, which automatically makes you unable to play. HOwever bad you are at 'ball, you can still run out there and suck. Falling down on skates doesn't exactly count :p

No matter what anyone says, THIS never happened in football (work warning): http://www.onfrozenblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/clintmalarchuk-pg-13.jpg

for those who probably know, yes it's Malarchuk.

Well duh, being able to skate would be a prerequisite to playing hocky. However you are making it seem like you only have to be consious in order to play football. Maybe on the elementary school playground that works. In full contact football you won't be consious very long. Sure, it takes no skill to walk on to a football field but you do have to know how to skate when you're on a rink of ice, but just being able to walk and run really doesn't make you into a football player or soccer player just like being able to skate doesn't make you into a hockey player or if it's your persuasion a figure skater.

I voted for the NFL being the more demanding sport on the body... Not that Hockey is any easier to play (missing teeth, puck in the eye, high stick, Burtuzzi'd, etc.) but I see far more injury reports filled with serious injuries on NFL highlights than I do for players in the NHL. But with that said -> Which sport would run you the greater risk of getting crittically injured? Lots of NHL trophies are in memormium to a former player.

The thing is, the question isn't in regards to playing on a pro team or in a competitive league.

I think it's safe to assume the question was regarding the professional aspect of each sport. Otherwise we could nitpick this topic into eternity. It's easiest to set the standard as Pro Football vs Pro Hockey, NFL vs NHL. At the very minimum College Hockey vs College Football (just because college players play more for the sport whereas many pro players are in it for the paycheck).

How many get critically injured in hockey these days? It does seem though at least one player in Hockey, (NHL, OHL, UHL, NCAA, etc.) seems to die from getting hit with the puck in the chest. I still remeber watching Pronger almost die at Joe Louis when he got one in the chest. How many of the critical injuries sustained are from cheap shots by players (think Todd Bertuzzi's shot on Steve Moore) instead regular play?

It also seems to me that at least one NFL, NCAA football player dies each season usually before the season itself starts due to the heat causing dehydration and heat exhaustion, but that's more through carelessness than actual football play. However the critical injuries sustained in football can and do regularly lead to paralysis. There is a reason for the warning label you find on a football helmet. I still remember the thumbs up Mike Utley gave the Lions fans as he was taken off the field of the Silverdome on a stretcher. :nice: I also remeber watching LT crush Joe Theismann leg. I was like , that must hurt.

Oh that was really scary when Pronger took the puck in the chest. I was all

Then there was the Al Mcinnis puck to the eye thing (before the lockout?) that caused him to retire.

#19 took that one puck in the face before he retired too. The Jiri Fisher moment was pretty scary but that wasn't related to a "on ice" activity.

Yes, both the MacIninis and Stevie Y. were injured in the eye area. Both choose not to wear a visor which is safety equipment that is available to all NHL players to prevent such injuries and which is required equipment in most other leagues.

The Jiri Fischer moment scared the hell out of me, nothing like seeing them performing CPR on a player on the floor of the bench.

If you're arguing which is harder in a pro situation, how can anyone say? It's just as easy for a pro baseball player to do what HE does as it is a pro hockey player to do what HE does. Doesn't make for much of a sensible debate does it?

Takraw beats both :P
