Hi Guys, this is my first post here. I am on my 3rd Mustang, just bought this one last week, and I would like to change out the clutch and flywheel. Has anyone here done this as a 1 man job, and if so, what did you use to lower the transmission and more importantly, how did you align the shaft back through the flywheel and to the crank.

Any help would be appreciated.

Car info:
95 Laser Red 5.0/122k miles/5 speed/completely stock (yes, even the mufflers, and the silencer is still on)

One man can strongarm the T5 if you need to... but it is MUCH easier with 2 guys... Even if it is jsut one person to push the clutch in for you when you are 90% re-inserting the trans to get that last 1/4" of insertion. I have had to do this a couple times.... Heck my Wife ould have been a huge help so it doesn't need to me a mechanical person to help you out...

Good luck and welcome man...

You could use another jack to help you support the transmission up to the flywheel area...

You can align the shaft by twisting the transmission yoke a little each way until it slides or pops in.

whtstang pointed you in a good direction...check it out.

Good Luck!

I've removed the transmission in my car about 4 times by myself. I used a hydraulic jack to lower and install the transmission.

To the get the trans shaft back in - all the way in - first use the alignment tool to get the pressure plate as straight as possible, then install the clutch cable to the fork, adjust, and after you've push the transmission in as far as it will go - with the help of the jack - have someone depress the clutch pedal and the shaft will seat for you. Easy as pie

Oh, check or better yet replace the rear main seal and the pilot bearing while in there.

If your rear main seal is in good shape or just a very small leak, I would suggest just leaving it. Often replacing the original gasket can make the issue worse...

Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips, I'll get to work on drawing up some sort of lifting device to make the job a little easier.

I just changed out my power steering pump so if anyone needs tips, let me know :nice:
