Torque Converter is on its way out?

Well recently I have been having the shudder problem with my AODE and that is normally caused by the torque converter. Well the past two days sometimes when i got WOT it seems like my belt is slipping but it is really my trans. Meaning the rpms will go up but the car will be accelerating very very slowly if anything at all. It is like reving in neutral but under load.

So you think that this would be time for a new torque converter?

I also know my tranny itself is pretty bullet proof since i had it highly upgraded. If it is the torque converter I think I am going to go with and Edge, screw PI.

Thanks,

Dan

ok,

well the fluid does not look burnt or smell burnt.

One thing i noticed when it does shudder it will sometimes make a loud bang from where the transmission is. I know that none of the gears are screwed up because when manually shifting they all pull hard...it just seems like it is the torque converter and it is not catching when it down shift, but that only happens rarely

I was having this same problem. I eventually lost 2nd to 3rd, after doing some research on here I realized my problem was to many wot going into overdrive. So now I have a edge 3200 stall converter sitting here waiting on a performance automatic 4r70w that is somewhere on a freight truck.

That is the thing I never go WOT with overdrive on because I have heard horror stories on the forum...and also its not really a banging sound it is more of a clunking, I couldnt think of the right word last night

Okay what happens when you go WOT into OD? We are talking speed of 100 mph+/-. Having done this on a few occassions what am I risking beside a speeding ticket.

well with me when screwing around i go only up to 110 and that is where i top out 3rd in my car and then slow down...and when doing this I have o/d off.

Paul, about the PI converter, a mustang shop by me already had the trans and everything prebuilt and i mean fully built up trans...so if i would contact PI it would probably have to be through the shop.

there is a sensor called the MLP, Manual Lever Position Sensor. if the gear only slips when its in drive and with OD off and not when you are manually holding the gear, then that could be your problem. the other thing is the clutches, they could be slipping, or burnt, and then they dont work at all, there are metal rings and then a friction plate then a metal plate, they are called clutches, there are several inside the tranny. they are what does the job of a clutch in a stick car.

PI is a very good company from what i have heard.

i just had my tranny rebuilt, and what they call highly modified, may not be your idea. i just had mine rebuilt and beefed up to hold 450hp ish for my 331. yea they put better clutches in it and did a basic rebuild, like changing seals and what not, and they changed the valve body pressures so it shifts faster/harder, and i got a 3500 stall. yea and 400 miles later, its dead. were trying to figure out what went wrong.

O/D is a band, not a gear. I have my last band in my garage. All it took was 3 WOT shifts into O/D to fry it. I need to take pics of the band. It's wore down past the rivets and they are barely holding. A little longer and part of the band would have been popped off when the rivets wore through. :(

My new SCT chip is set to hold third gear until 7,000 rpms so I should never have a shift into O/D at WOT again. Even if I forget to manually turn it off. :nice:

I guess I've been living on borrowed time. Had the tranny rebuilt about 5 years ago and have done many WOT 3/OD shifts. Now I did ask that a Kevlar(sp) band be installed so maybe that is my saving grace.

The picture I need to take, isn't of a stock band. I've had my transmission gone through 3 times already. 7 years of nitrous is rough on them. I have no idea how you are hanging in there with a KB on the car.

The KB is a recent addition (3 months). I'll take more care now that the risk has been brought to my attention.

You'll find the edge design makes PI look bulletproof. The whole kit they use is just trash in the opinion of most of the industry. Their warranty has proven to be crap as well. 2 years ago edge was all you heard about on corral, now you hear about them but it isn't good.
That aode can seriously benefit from some mods to the valvebody to improve the lockup flow.

I rarely speak about what others "say". I only deal with my personal experiences. I've had two Edge converters and they have been/currently are wonderful. I only went to the second one as I changed my engine combo and my stall setting. I've been more than impressed with their customer service. I've also gone through THREE no name converters that glittered my transmission.

Kinda ironic to me you make your comment, when this thread is about a PI possibly taking a dump. I've never run a PI, I can't afford one. Could they be better, sure... but I'll probably never know personally.

Well my trans was made by a reputable mustang shop here in Northern NJ, also known as Valley Performance...They didnt tell me the exact specifics of what was in the trans but they said hardened gears, brand new clutch plates, PI torque converter set at 2800 stall, shift kit and kevlar overdrive...That is all I know and I know if I go back to them and ask what is specifically in my car, they are not going to remember since it was 2 years ago.
