Looking to Turbo my 67 Fastback

I m thinking about turboing my 67 fastback. Any insight on what engine size is the best? I have the stock 289 but was think of going bigger. I have noticed in some of the other threads, people have mentioned 351's or small block 427's. Not sure what people are doing or what they are experiencing when tuboing their mustangs.
 
What are your power Goals with your mustang, and your current mods?
Also your budget, and any technical skills (or how you plan on getting the work done) you have.

People use alot of different motors for different reasons.

Setting a turbo specific motor isnt to troublesome, but knowing what you have to spend and where your trying to go (and where your at currently) will help people direct you.
 
I would like to have a power to weight ratio of around 300 bhp per ton and spend up to (preferably less) $10,000. I am going for a daily driver / track car (more daily driver). I was thinking of putting on an air ride suspension, 6spd trans, mostly stock interior and a roll cage.

To be totally honest all of my buddies drive FD's (3rd gen RX7s) and I want to keep up with them going straight and on the curvy bits.

As for current mods. My car is still in the tear down stage, so there arent any. I am more looking into my budget. Id like to have an idea of what im going to do before I do it and about what is will cost.
 
out the door turbocharging would cost somewhere around $4,000. for your goals (~450 wheel horse) you can do with a supercharger for cheaper ($3,000), or go with spray. At this level though you'd need an aftermarket block that can reliably handle that power. I would suggest going to a 408 stroked from a 351W, a good set of heads, plus the power adder would get you easily there, and reliably. Don't expect to just pay 10 grand and have a complete ready to burn tubber car. in addition to the motor alone ($5000), you'd need a trans built for that power ($2000) plus a new axle ($2000), so you have 9 grand in the drivetrain alone! you need to get planning before you start wrenching and find where ALL the dollars are going to go and whether or not you are willing to commit.
 
theres a guy here that does the turbo kits, whats his name???????????????? Oh yeah 10secgoal.He'll see this and chime in.The T70 will support up to 800 hp.There is no real answer to what a stock block will withstand.Mine should make about 500/500, will it last?????Who knows but it will be fun in the meantime :nice:
 
Like stated, 10,000 is a nice budget and a good chunk of change to pour into any ride. Obviously starting with a car designed/made over 40 years ago , you will be having to upgrade everything as you go. That is, if you want it to handle and last with all that power.

There are alot of routes still you can take,
351 stroked with blower or turbo
302 blower or turbo
or big block territory.

Looking at your budget and wish list... I would wager to guess you will spend an easy 8,000 to have a reliable motor/tranny combo. You can cut down alot on that cost by shopping around and doing alot of the busy work yourself.

My suggestion (cheapest way i see).
302 with forged internals
--Either low mileage shortblock
--Or cheap rebuild with forged rods/pistons
--Decent cam

Rear end, just slap a 9" in with some decent springs.

Dont expect to have it handle as well as 4-way independent suspension found on later RX's. You'd be killing them in the fun / cool factor very easily.

Turbo/supercharged 302 if done mostly yourself (depending on your skill level) should be the cheapest.

302 parts are as cheap as water due to their large volume. Forced induction is great , but keep in mind there are large amounts of ways to skin this cat.

Heck, go buy a crate motor (5k), trans (2k) and a rear end and point and smile.

That 10k was just for the engine...

Planning is what im trying to do. I want to look at what it is i want to do, what is will cost and then can i afford it.
 
you should be able to put together a motor for well under ten grand. Buy a nice short block from coast high performance and boost it. I would stay away from the 302 ford for 500+ horsepower. You'd be worried about splitting the block which isn't fun. A 408 windsor stroker with a set of AFR 185cc heads and a nice cam will be streetable and get you where you wanna go (~500 depending on cam choice). A g-force T5 would be a good trans and is a direct swap for your car. then the requisite 9 inch rear axle. That would be fun. with slicks and a set of good skinnies and drag shocks, you should be able to lift the front tires :)
 
if you want to have fun in the twisties and not be overpowering the tires around every corner i'd suggest staying with a stock cube motor. either a 351 or a 302 stroked to 347-351, roush just came out with a super nice FRPP Boss 302 block stroked to 351 with e'brock cleveland heads and a killer looking EFI setup based on the 69/70 Boss 302 T/A cars with the cross boss intake and inline 4v carb. it is a killer looking engine. or you could build your own version of it using a boss block and E'brock heads and e'brock carb'd intake that they just came out with for the 302 as well

:D I will. But it's kinda hard not to seem like I'm selling a kit at the same time. So I'll tell you why I went this route.
Everything will cost you about 4k total. Inlcuding a fuel system, oil lines two fuel lines, an A/F monitor,boost guage, everything. A blower big enough to make the same power as these turbo will cost as much as a turbo kit. They need fuel also, and you would still have to buy headers. So in the long run they cost the same. Unless you go roots. Then the fuel system isn't as complicated, nor is the tune (just like N/A). But you are at the bottom of the pole as far as efficiency goes.
I am cheap as most are. So I didn't want to get rid of the C-4 I already had a ton of money in. But now I can keep up with people on the freeway because I run 3.25 gears now instead of the 4.11's I used to run with the bottle, or like a blower needs. Turbos don't need the gear like everything else.
2k on rearend, 1k lifetime warranty tranny C-4 from PA like Paul has, 350 for Caltracs and then decide on your motor. This setup is pretty bullet proof and cheap. there are other ways, but the cost goes up from there.

The fact that you can avoid all of the complication of building a turbo setup to only make a measly 450hp. Go with a turbo if you're attempting to make 700+hp, otherwise just build the engine right and you will make your 450hp mark. You'll also have it done and be able to drive it a whole lot sooner not to mention it will be cheaper. Does that sound fun? Unlike your RX7 buddies with their wonderful rotary engines you do not need a turbo to make 450hp. Do I smell an exploded rotary?

With a 450 HP engine you will not see that at the wheels. So to put a turbo on see a measly 450, that would be at the wheels and thats on the low side, at the flywheel you'll be more towards 540-560HP, now thats real fun.

So to "bolt on" a turbo and see a RWHP gain of 100+, thats not measly to me.

a turbo kit isnt that much more work to install once its built. I can bolt my whole kit on with heades in about 1:20, with most of that being the headers.

there is much truth in this quote. keep it simple and save a ton of money by just going with a carbed stroker.
 
To be fair, we're talking 450rwhp. Which is not all that easy N/A. And with a small set of heads and cam, much more streetable. Not to mention the said gear change. Tons of people taht don't want 700 HP turbo charge. Lots of them do it with a stock bottom end also. That's a far stretch from reality for a streetable 302. You can stroke and poke and buy a ton of good parts. But the cost will start to get up there with the cost of forced induction. I just love the sound and endless amounts of torque. But each has it's merits.
 
The fact that I want to turbo my car and that I want around 400+ rwhp, are two different things, At least to me. I want to turbo it because it’s different, the least traveled road if you will. So what i am trying to figure out is. Does that fit into my 10k I allotted for my engine? It sounds like it does. So the next question is. What is the best way to get the power I want? Even that is getting a little ahead of my self. Right now I am trying to plan my budget and it sounds like 10k is more than enough. It looks like there are plenty of options to look at and all I need to do now is figure out which is the best for me. I would rather spend more money and have a stronger engine.
 
Know don't forget when you make this sort of horsepower (500+hp.) Everything else goes up in price, Tranny,rearend , all the bracing, and suspension. I built a 850+ hp motor and you can't get a way with a stock anything anymore look to spend at least 3 grand on a tranny (I went with a Dynamic Racing Mighty Mite X6 C4)1,500 plus on a axle (I went Strange with 35 spline)
