Strange whining when driving sometimes (like a little supercharger)

Hey guys, sometimes when Im driving I notice a subtle whining that follows the engine rpms. It sounds almost like a quiet, mild supercharger. Its more prevelent when you cruise at like 2,500 rpm then give it some gas. I doesnt really sound bad, I dont think its harming anything, but Im just curious what it is. Could it be the alternator kicking on?

My car has done that for the 2 years I have owned it, and the previous owner said it did that the whole 8 years that he owned it. To me it sounds like probably the input shaft bearing of the transmission, but I can't be sure. Its louder under load however. I'm not worried about it, nothing has changed yet...

oh, and people have also asked me if it is supercharged :D

do you have an aftermarket shifter? when i added my shifter i noticed more whining? i assume its normal and i just couldnt hear it until the stock shifter came out.

no, i have the stock shifter on the car (unfortunately.. haha)
the wierd thing is, its intermittent.. like all day driving today I didnt hear it once (and it was givin 'er alot of gas today)
I really hope its not the tranny going out  I was wondering if it was the AIR pump, and if it is that would be alright. If I go with an OR-H im planning on deleting it anyways. Anybody else think they know what this sound might be?

mine did exactly that when my tranny was seriously on it's way out. sounded kinda cool, but i knew it wasn't good since i didn't have a supercharger, lol.

I just posted this in another thread.....for me it was the sign (sound) of my tranny going.....and now it's gone.......the aode is dead.....waiting for a transplant........
Put the car in neutral and see if it continues to follow the rpm's when you rev it coasting down the road.....

i had a whine myself not too long ago... it was the regulator in my alternator... and it would follow the rpms when i revved it as well... sometimes it would say as the rpms go up and slowly shift into another gear and would fade away... sometimes it did it, sometimes it didnt.

but yeah, for me, my supercharger sound was a regulator... put ur highbeams on and rev the car, if they blow out... its ur alternator... and then ull need new highs too LOL (a friend did that in my car, no clue WHY he did it... but i had to buy another set of lights)

Mine did the same thing for about a month, I thought it was the cold air intake I had installed.

Turns out it's also the same noise a transmission makes when it's leaking fluid and about to leave you stranded on the side of the road at 2am in the morning...on the way home from the hospital.
