Using Vista, new laptop & builtin dvd burner

What I’d like to do:

1.Take a recorded DVD such as a home movie, store it on my C drive. (not a problem.)
2. Using a new blank DVD, copy the stored video files onto it in such a way that it can be played on a DVD player.

I cannot believe the crap I’m going through. I think if I supplied the background info, you would die of boredom.

I will add that when I complete step 1, I seem to copy and store onto my C drive files of type .BUP, .IFO and .VOB.

What is the most straightforward way to simply get those files from my C drive and burn a freegin’ DVD?

Thanks for your help!

It costs money but to me it's worth it for the ease of use when doing backups.

AnyDVD is a program that runs in the background to decode the DVD files copy protection scheme, thus allowing you to use CloneDVD to rip the files to your hard drive cleanly.

If you ever want to burn a backup copy of those DVD files, CloneDVD will do that for you as well using the burning feature. It will also allow you to fit a dual layer DVD onto a single layer DVD using compression. You can also delete special features, previews, commentarys, etc, if you want to.

I love this combo. If your dog ever chews a DVD (mine has ), you now have a backup to go to (if it's stored to a different place and the dog didn't chew it).:nice:

This is a cheap security blanket for those $20 DVDs.

I don't know about vista either but I've always used DVD Shrink. It's a free program. After you "backup" the DVD, you just go into Nero and click burn new DVD video. Then select all the files and drag them to the "VideoTS" folder and click burn.

Some people say that they have luck with 'on the fly' recording but I've never got near the quality as I do with DVD Shrink. Hell, sometimes it looks better than the original DVD.

OK, I used the DVDShrink and then tried to burn the dvd with the native Vista Windows dvd burn program. It failed a few times. Error msg: "DVD burn failed" click exit to close. Nice, huh?

So this evening when I rebooted, my laptop proudly announced, "dvd titles waiting to be burned. Click here to begin."

So, I did. And it correctly burned what it couldn't do yesterday.
LOL. Windows blows.
Thank you to all for your help.

OK, either I haven't explained or some of YOU may be mistaken.

When I download a DVD video from my Sony Handicam, it is stored on my laptop or burned direct to DVD as VIDEO in 3 types of files.
1. BUP
2. IFO
3. VOB

So, I thought my DVD buring problem was having a "bad" format. Well, to verify, I took the newest Spiderman movie direct from the store, put it in my Vista laptop and guess what type of files the Spiderman movie's video is stored in ?

1. BUP
2. IFO
3. VOB

Yup. So I am capturing exactly what I need (obviously) to create a Video DVD that can be played in my DVD player.

am having major issues with the Built in Vista DVD Burner! It doesn't like these formats. In fact, the default settings it wants is AVI and MPEG crap.

Please help me find a Vista software (preferably freebie) that can simply burn these files types off my hard drive and onto a blank DVD.
1. BUP
2. IFO
3. VOB

Thanks!

The VOB, etc files are the standard files for DVDs. DVD Shrink will be able to handle them, as does Clone DVD. There are torrents out there for DVD programs, CloneDVD included if you're into that.

You can also check out www.afterdawn.com for their guides on dvd burning:nice:

I don't even know what torrents really are and I don't think I need them. :)

I have installed DVD Shrink but it doesn't do me any good. It cannot burn those files to a DVD either. (To enable burning, please install Nero.)

Step one: Remove Vista OS

Step two: Install XP OS

Just kidding but I have always had luck with DVD X-Copy super easy to use but you can't make any menus with it or anything but you can burn (back-up) any DVD with it. Walks you through step by step.

haha, i like the vista comment.

years ago i used dvdxcopy all the time. then as time went on i noticed that it wouldnt copy more and more of the new releases. do you know what im talking about?

CloneDVD was the one I described in my earlier post above. :nice:

Works great for me

It worked fine for me also. Did you pay for it? How much?

When I purchased this neat device called Dazzle from Pinnacle it was great! It came with Studio 10 which can help you edit videos. However, Vista doesn't like it.
Pinnacle makes good stuff but customer service is crapola. They promised a return email with my Studio 10 questions and never responded.

So, I guess I'll have to buy the damn Clone2DVD just to burn some discs. The Dazzle makes it easy to grab any video from say an old camcorder and burn it to DVD on the fly without using the hard drive.

I want to store the Video on my laptop so I can burn as many copies as I want without needing to use the camcorder after the 1st shot.
