Which gears to buy??

I have 4.10s in my automatic and have put about 27K miles since last March with them and absolutely love them! If you can come across an older set of FRPP(not Motive)gears then you will be better off as the new ones are not as good of quality.

I'm running 4:30's with a 5-speed, these 3 valves love to rev, so you can throw some gear at it. Even with 4:30's it doesn't run out of steam when you trip the lights. Steeper gears can even save wear and tear on the clutch if you do alot of around town driving for those with manuals. I would at least go with 4:10. I used ford racing gear set and have had no problems, very quiet.

?? i just purchased a set of 4.10's from 50resto. they are FRPP. On the box it says made in Italy and they are micro polished.

If your not familiar with how the Italians machine quality steel I would take another look.
:nice:

So consensus is 4.10s are the way to go? Just toss them in there?

I would get a shop to do it, unless you or someone helping you knows exactly what you're doing. I'm going to go with 3.73s, but I also plan on going with a lower tire profile which will put me about half way between 3.73s and 4.10s on the stock tire.

How bad have the 4.10's hurt gas milage. When I pick it up my Mustang will be my daily driver so mpg is a concern for me. Also would the 4.10's be a real big jump from the 3.55's with a manual car?

Mine is the auto with 4.10s and I avg 19-20 with mixed driving and 24 on a gentle long cruise on the highway.

Those are the newer ones. A local speed shop that specializes in Stangs has had problems with these making noise. Mine are the older FRPP gears and I've never had an issue with mine and he had done nearly 2 dozen S197s by the time mine rolled through. I believe it is due to the materials they use in the S197 clutch packs that is the main culprit. Good luck with them.

I know my tires suck (Fuzion 255/45-17 ZRI's) but wouldn't 4:10's make 1st gear all but worthless around town? I had a 5.0 with 4:10 (I know these cars like more gear then the older ones) and I would drive around town starting in 3rd and the only time I could use 1st was with slicks and a good track. Any advice would be great as I am thinking about getting some gears from JPC to add to my drive shaft I have on the way! Also would a drive shaft + 3:90/4:10's be enough for .5 sec in the 1/4?

I use 1st all the time with 4.10's, there's not that big of a difference going from the stock 3:55 as far as normal driving around town goes.

Punch it though and you'll run out of 1st really quick with 4.10's and the aluminum DS.:nice:

so what difference would there be in 3:90 and 4:10?

Depends on rear tire height and what your trap RPMs are. Seasoned drag racers squeezing every last drop out of the car could tell, but most of us may not be able to notice a thing. To me, saying 4.10 just sounds better:rlaugh:

i have 4.30s and its not bad on the street.
 what size rear tire are you running and how are highway cruising speeds(70-80MPH)?

Well of course. But if I'm going away from my stock 3.55 (right?) going to the 4.10 is a shorter ratio thus improving acceleration by gearing the car more for that instead of top end speed? It seems everyone has the 4.10s, is that just because it provides a descent ratio for street drivability?

My worry is about forced induction, I plan on bolting on a Paxton 9lb blower, would it be possible to get any traction in 1st with that kind of power on tap? I'm not the best driver but not the worst either, just worry about going through more tires than I do already do.

sorry for high jacking this tread a little, but anyone with advice on how to build a 12.00 car with street manners, I am listening.
