What is a "stroker" motor?

Can anyone school me on what a "stroker" is? and no sexual connotations please (i.e. probe, blower, stroker, etc)

when someone refers to an engine as a "stroker" it just means it has a longer than stock stroke.

the stroke of an engine is basically how far a piston moves up and down in a cyliner. since an engines displacement is measured when the piston is at bottom dead center, if you increase the stroke of an engine it increases the displacement.

for example most 4.6l strokers will increase the displacement to 5.0l. the bore is the same size but since the piston moves further down on each stroke there is a bigger volume of air in the cylinder to be compressed.

to stroke it you need a new rotating assembly with a longer stroke

You'll gain some power - and some nice torque. It's fairly expensive to do - unless you're building a block from scratch - because it involves basically stripping the engine down to its block.

yeah, when a motor has a longer stroke the more displacement will give you more power, and yeah usually a good amount of torque, but like stark said, its a very expensive project if you are paying for labor. if youre going to stroke it you might as well use forged internals and throw in a few more mods while you have it torn down.

But it looks like I'll just supercharge my motor. I'm hoping ATI Prochargers are reliable (I like Prochargers because they come with a sweet looking intercooler).

lol you can put an intercooler on any supercharger, so i dunno if i'd choose that way, but ya you'll probably gain more power with a procharger than by just stroking it.

I know you can put an intercooler on any supercharger, but the one thing I love about Procharger kits are that it's standard (comes with every kit) I don't like how Vortech sells a non-intercooled kit. I also want something to show in the "mouth" of my Saleen front bumper

I've heard some negative comments about the Procharger - like the leaking oil seals issue. I would go positive displacement - preferably TorkTech. No visible intercooler - but there's no mistaking the awesome sound of a twinscrew supercharger.

I have a FRPP strut tower brace right now so a positive displacement blower is not something I'm wanting to put on because I love the handling of my car right now a polished kenne bell is though!

Go with the procharger and don't look back. Like said above, any of the companies can have a head unit go bad. Its all in how u take care of them. Good luck.

Ive had several prochargers and havent had a problem. make sure you get the 3 core intercooler. most oil seal problems are a result of morons cranking down on the plug.
