Okay, so i bit the bullet and scored a set of GT-40P heads.

Lets see what I need for a nice healthy combo.

My stock 97K mile lower end. Solid compression, still has cross-hatching.
stock GT-40P heads
Cobra Intake
65mm TB
TFS Stage 1 camshaft
MAF conversion w/24# injectors

Those are the parts I already have...now onto supporting mods.

P headers
RR's. Should I go 1.6's or can i get away with 1.7's with this setup?

Should i do any work to the heads? What should I do for springs? Doesn't TFS make a kit that works with the stock GT-40/E7 style head? What about porting?

What about the Cobra lower intake? A little porting by Tmoss??

I have PLENTY of time. I just want to build myself a little fun combo while i decide on a more serious setup (IE, supercharged 331, 4.6L DOHC swap, etc. )

i say just run 1.6s, keep it simple. will keep the rocker geometry closer to factory so you dont have to jack with adjusting them, pedestals are sort of a pain to adjust compared to stud rockers.

as for springs, i'd just take the heads to a reputable machine shop and have them hook you up, as for porting it would definatly help, along with the lower intake. but if your planning on bigger and better later on, it may be wiser to leave the parts stock. but i think a port job on the heads by thumper and have tmoss do the intake that would be a killer setup. just depends on what your going to do.

if you were to stick with this combo forever, i'd say get them ported to maximize them. but money for port work could be better spent on parts for the BIG build.

The TFS spring kit is supposed to work with all E7/GT40, but Ford made some rare funky off tolerance exhaust valves on some GT40's and maybe some P's IIRC. I was lucky enough to get a set of these heads, so if you get the TFS spring kit and cant install it without a boat load of shims on the exhaust side PM me.

They do!

Funny thing is i had a set of E7's with the TFS springs and under 5K on the heads and I chucked them :(

Now i gotta buy them again.

Here is my combo

Box stock P heads, Track heat intake(used to have a GT40 but sold it since it had no EGR), TFS stage 1 cam, 1.6 Scorpion RRS, FRPP ceramic coated P headers,70mm TB 76 MM C&L MAF, BBK O/R x pipe and a Magnaflow catback, 4.10s and Transgo shift kit

My best time NA is 14.0@100 mph. Keep in mind this a full weight GT vert with an AOD that still has the stock converter in it. So I think that the times are pretty decent. My best time on the n20 is 12.72 @109 on a 100 shot.

I used the TFS spring kit on my P heads and had no problems. There are different retainers for the exhaust and intake valves. Ford used a rotator on the exhaust valve and that causes the groove for the lock to be at a different height on the exhaust valves. Once I figured that out the kit was a pretty easy install.

I am pretty happy with the combo. Except for the MAF, TB, X pipe, catback and gears, everything was used so I saved a pretty good amount of money.

Personally I would run the P specific headers. I heard that it can be done with stock style headers but it can be a pain to replace plugs and such but I have no firsthand experience. I got my FRPPs off ebay and they were brand new and I paid about $150 for them. If you have some time to wait and hunt for deals they are out there. I think that at the time the FRPPs were going for over $300 if you bought them from summit or another speed shop.

The car makes good low end usable power. I have the shift kit to shift pretty firm and if your on the gas it will bark the tires on the 1-2 shift. Its a fun car.

I honestly wouldn't do the cam, unless you want the sound. A degreed stock cam works very well with the 40Ps. Toss some 1.7 rockers on top, good springs and all the supporting mods and you would have a stout combo! Makes for a FUN street car.

I'm using a set of 1.7 rr off a cobra with no problems. Also, you need a new set of headers that'll fit due to the diffrent angle of the spark plugs that are on the gt40p heads. I have a set of FRPP headers. I know MAC also sells ones that fit. Check out my signature for a list of parts. I love my setup, car pulls very well to 5500 rpm's, especially with the tubular GT40 upper and lower I just put on.

I already have the cam though, so i might as well use it.

Headers i know about. Been meaning to replace my BBK's anyway. I just want a basic setup to have fun with that i can slap together in a couple weekends. I have tons of other stuff iwant to focus on before building a nice motor setup.

I got almost the same setup. Im running the standard gt40s shaved .020", explorer intake, 70mm throttle body, 24lbsinjectors, 1.6 RR, trickflow stage 1 cam with trickflow valve springs. It made almost 300hp and 340 ftlbs of torque through an AOD with nothing but a Transgo shift kit.

ever run that at the track? what were the numbers if you did.

I hope to run it in two weeks. I live in Reynolds,Ga. We have a 1/4 mile track here in town. When i do run it i will get back to you and post the time slips. Before the gt40 stuff. I ran a 14.26 at 98. That was a stock engine, 3.73 gear, msd ignition bassani exhaust. I plan to get a stall converter for it soon. Maybe run some low 13s.

I disagree with the cam.

while I went with the HO cam for a while...the tfs 1 cam pulled more on the upper end with little to no loss of torque down low.

FYI, my brother made 237 to the wheels with the regular gt40 heads and full smog...but otherwise identical combo.

My best suggestion is to run no smog if at all possible. Long tube headers and no cats. Most of the guys with your combo make 260-280 or more at the wheels with no smog.

The 24's will work, but so will stock 19# injectors too.

Here is a clip of mine....

I just sold her but it's a 97 explorer motor, gt40p heads, tfs 1 cam, ported explorer intake, 19# injectors, stock mass air meter, STOCK 4 CATTED h pipe, ford racing ceramic p headers, and flowmaster cat back.

the cats make it sound extremely mild...but if you turn the speakers up, you can hear the lope.

The tfs 1 cam actually sounds real badass at idle if you don't run cats.
