I need a new air intake/filter

I'm getting ready to install my AEM in a week or two, and I'll be switching to a MAP system so the MAF and filter have to go. So what would be the best way to do this?

It's a rig job I did with a piece of my old CAI. I meant for it to just be temporary, but I never got around to fixing it. :rolleyes: Anyways, I read on here at some point that a short intake tube with a long filter showed the best performance, so I was thinking of getting one of those long skinny K&N filters and putting it in place of the MAF/filter setup I currently have on there. I think that will be the cheapest easiest solution. I also don't really want a CAI with the filter hidden in the fender well because then I would have to cut up my engine bay.

That is because the shorter the intake is the more responsive and better flowing it is.


Get you a 90* elbow bend...

and build you a intake with a 4" pipe with a big filter...

and if you want make a heat shield for it so the heat from the fans doesn't confuse the MAF.



Also the IAT between a fender mount CAI and a engine mounted intake with a shield is no different at speeds above 20mph. At idle the temps are a couple degrees different but I don't know about you but I don't race at idle.

Are you sure? At speed the air drawn from the engine area should be considerably warmer than the ambient air temperature due to the fact that most of the engine bay air was heated as it comes through the radiator.
 
from the looks of it,he filled in all the holes and hid alot of the wires in the engine bay.

maybe he closed up the hole where the original intake drew it's air from:shrug:
 
So I measured my current pipe at 3.5". Would I see a huge difference by going to a 4" pipe? The ID of the 3.5" pipe is almost exactly the same ID as my TB.

What I'm thinking is I'll go with the long 3.5" filter from AFM and use my current elbow. Sound like a good idea?
 
Geez, it went from a $50 filter to a filter, 4" intake, 90mm tb, and opening my intake up from 80mm to 90mm. And suddenly I'm close to $400 into this. I've got more important things that money could go towards. The most I want to spend right now is around $100, which should cover the filter and 4" elbow if I go that route.

How much power do you think I would gain though, going from a full 80mm intake to full 90mm? 5-10RWHP?
 
I think you would gain more than that. Honestly I've looked at your sig before and thought to myself "Damn, that guys car should run faster". Theres no excuse for your car to not be a 128mph car in the 1/4th. Now I don't know how big of a cam Ed gave you and I also don't know your tracks elevation but if everything is in check you should be alot faster. You have got a huge motor, huge heads, huge exhaust, and you are restricting it with a 80mm MAF and a 80mm TB. Makes no sense to me.... Here is a pic of my 90mm Accufab next to the 70mm Eddy.

IMO this is your bottle neck. I also wouldn't worry about how many ponys you pick up I'd be more interested and the changes it did at the track.
 
:stupid: 80mm for an 400+ cube engine and afr 225 heads seems really small to me. Just make yourself a custom air intake too if you're going over to MAP. It might not be chrome and pretty, but abs plastic has less heat transfer and therefore more power potential than a stainless intake, my 2 cents
 
I've looked at a CFM chart on this somewhere and have to disagree. Thats why I went with 80mm accufab on my 414c.i. Also accufab flows WAAAY more than any other TB. IIRC it was very clear that I would not need more.
 
it may just be me ,but i think there would be more to gain by getting air from in the fender than by sucking in that hot under hood air, your aem will tell you this from the air intake temp readings .then you can start watching vacuum readings and determine if bigger parts are needed.
 
Mike is there any chance you can do a right up or how to when you change over to MAP? I'm hoping to install my AEM this summer ( if i get everything else done) and just want to know what i'm getting into with changing over to MAP.

Not Mike but here's all you have to do. Disconnect the MAF. MAP signal is pin 65, for the sensor ground you can tap into Pin 9 or 46 or the EMS ground and for the 5v reference tap into Pin 26. In AEMPro go to Setup-Sensors-MAP-Options-check speed density and now you are running a MAP system. It's really that straight forward.
