Pulling my motor for the first time, Lots of questions please help!

Ok my plan is to pull the motor out of my 94 and to rebuild it myself in my garage. This is my first time to do something this big, I have done plenty of work on cars but never pulled a motor before much less rebuild one, so suffice to say this is my first rodeo haha

Anyway does anyone have any write-ups/links on doing this? What do i need as far as tools are concerned to succesfully pull the motor out of the car? I plan on leaving the tranny attached because i will probably get it rebuilt as well.

Like i said this is my first time to do this and I may have some help from someone who is experienced but none-the less I would like to be prepared and know exactly what i need to do.

I have a chiltons manuel but it doesn't explain how to actually pull the motor out.. I can only assume I will need a cherry picker and an engine stand...but other than that I dont know..

Normal hand tools will get it done if you don't have air...nothing to worry about there.....It may be easier for you since it is your first time to pull the engine and trans together...you can rent a cherry picker if you don't want to buy one...

Two major suggestions........
1. Take pictures of all the connection areas and all over the bay....this will help you reference when putting things back together......

2. Colored zip ties.....for electrical connections or label them however...you can eventually figure them out but why not take the time before hand to make it much easier when you put it back it.

Pulling the engine is cake.....extra set of hands help to tilt etc......you should be able to handle it no problem.

Forgot to add.....since it is your first time....get some plastic bowls / bags and label and separate all the bolts that you pull out....screws/bolts....keep them with the parts you pull off. After a few pulls you remember but it will take a little more time at the beginning but you want be searching for a "certain bolt on install.....

It's pretty straightforward, our engines look like they have crap everywhere, but when it gets down to it, a lot of the stuff stays there, I'll see if I can find the pics when I did my first engine swap, it was pretty easy, only special tools that you need are fuel line disconnects...from what I remember, it's been a while

I am in the process of doing this right now. I didnt build the motor though.

1) Get plastic baggies and a marker and put your bolts in the bags and write what they went to on them.

2) I put a piece of masking tape on all electrical connections with what it was writtten on the piece of tape. easier than searching through pics.

You dont have to disconnect the AC just unbolt it and lay it on the passenger side fender.

Might want to grab a power stearing pully puller. Like said above it looks like alot in there but when you get down to it there is not much there.

I would take digital pics, get the glad baggies and a sharpie for labeling bolts, and BUY AN ENGINE TILT for the picker if you are pulling the trans at the same time. Be prepared for fluids. Get cat liter, or oil dry. Trans fluid, power steering fluid, coolant are normal. I would get laquer thinner as well. I like to soak all the parts in it to remove the crud and it cleans everything so well.

yep, even after labeling the pics have come in handy......and I keep a supply of cat litter on hand at all times......great clean up material there....

who makes a good cherry picker?

Mine is from Torin. I purchased a 2 ton unit from northern tools. This thing is stout, and very heavy! It will take all the muscle you and another fellow has to pick the box up. I see them online now for $229. I picked mine up at a store. I like it because the legs fold up. I just wheel it into a corner and it actually takes up less room than the engine stand.

x20 on the bags with labels of what bolts go to what.

I did this mostly for the engine/tranny and everything inbetween.

I would have done the same for everything in the engine bay but I got 2 cars worth of nuts and bolts so It shouldn't be a big issue.

As for everything else, a tilt is nice but I did it just fine without one.


I also pulled the engine with the engine harness intact, I've seen a lot of people fully remove it before hand for fear of not being able to remember how it all goes back but that seemed to be too much work for me.

Drain all your fluids before you lift it out, specially the tranny fluid.
Don't forget to take the shifter off, it will get hung on the firewall otherwise.
Power steering lines and A/C lines will need to be disconnected. If you don't want to refill the A/C just unbolt it from the engine brackets.
