Hey guys recently got motor and suspension rebuilt in my old original 2.3 car it now has a built 8.8 rear end new rear and front suspension and a v8 runnin about 300+ hp in it question is about the transmission. I believe this car still has the original T5 tranny that came with the car I know it still had the original 7.5 axle under the rear until i replaced it a few weeks ago been having trouble with the transmission grinding really bad and its very stubborn at changing gears especially under hard accelleration. Can the 4 cyl trannys be rebuilt to withstand the new motor or do i pretty much just need to drop the bread on a rebuilt WC T5? I been getting mixed reviews around town about it some say I can rebuild the old tranny and others have just told me to find one out of a original v8 car. Any ideas??

You can buy a v8 gear set and a input shaft and swap it right in I believe. I know a friend of mine had a 4 cyl t5 and he went to a guy that rebuilds t5s, the guy sold him a gear set (already on the main shaft) and installed it with a input shaft. So I don't know if the mainshafts are the same but if they are then it's a straight swap. You'll need a new pilot bearing to fit the v8 input shaft

 i went the easy route and bought my transmission from Astro Performance. for me it was the best bang for the buck. rebuild kit, Z spec gears, no hassle... saved a lot of money cause they were in my back yard. i have 4.30 gears and used to have the 4 cyl trans with the 3.95 first gear. i got a 2.90 first gear now. so much better, cruising down the highway is more enjoyable with a .60 OD. i highly recomend the Zspec gear ratio's best thing i have done to the car.
