This is not a post asking if its a good deal or prices. What I need to know is are these cars good enough for daily drivers (in the summer of course). I have a 2002 Civic Si right now that is supercharged, I love the car but honestly i need some torque =P. I have found a mint 1987 GT with T-Tops and have fallen in love. What kind of maintainance am I looking at? Is there anything I should address before purchasing the GT? Can they be decent DD's? Any other info would be great! Hoping to be a proud GT owner soon :nice:

It's not going to be as plush or forgiving as your Honda, assuming the Civic isn't butchered. Also, t-tops WILL leak. You can spend a bunch of money on replacing all the seals, but it still may not be 100%. Lastly, any 23 year old car is going to take a little TLC, no matter how mint it is. Expect regular maintenance.

Dude, it's a Fox Mustang- It's a toy car. I wouldn't buy one as my DD, and I don't think I'm the only one, even in this place.

That said, welcome to the addiction. Let us know if you buy it! :nice:

My 91 LX is a great daily. Granted its unmolested and bone stock but its a great DD. BBBUTTT the gas mileage is the killer, I only get about 14 on a good day for some reason. It should do better but who knows. I drive the thing everywhere and it never has given me any huge issues. If you mod it and beat the snot out of it then things will break but I'm sure you already know that since you have a hooked up Honda, glad to see you're coming over from the dark side! Post up some pics! And x2 on the ttops leaking. My 88 has brand new seals in it and it leaks a bit where the ttops meet the body. No biggie but just something to expect.

I bought one and drive it daily for about a month before i got my truck, like everyone else said, they arent bad as long as they are taken care of. With the prices of fox mustangs these days tho and how cheap you could buy a 99-04 GT or 99 cobra, I would rather save a few more bucks and buy one of the newer models for a daily

trucks FTW, also i dont think it would be a comfy DD if you're above 5'10"

Like the guys said, its 23 years old, and yes your T's will leak. But if you take care of it, it'll take care of you. That being said, your Honda is for what you want a DD for. 23 years isn't young, cuz thats when I got my first 88 LX, and I'm old. Its a great car, but not for you to rely on all the time anymore-it did its bid for king and country:flag:, they're toys now. Having found an original T-top 87, you have found sort of a rarity. The other guys can tell you what to look for in the way of problems with them, but as we've discussed a million times on here, the more stock your car is when you get it, the better off a starting point you'll have. Look for obvious signs of previous butchery under the hood and under your dash. Hood, doors, hatch should all line up even or its been smacked and fixed wrong-or worse, twisted from racing-a common problem T cars have. Look at the back tires, the strip in the center should have nice tread on it or they've been lit up by Ricky Rocket a hundred times:nonono:. See if the exhaust is patchworked together, moves around or leaks. These are some basic things I look at when Fox(thats what it is, a Fox Mustang) hunting. It the best, cheapest time you'll have playing with cars, but badly addictive! Welcome!:D

I'm 5'11 :(. I was afraid of the t tops leaking as well. Damn. Hmmm what to do. Also 14mpg sucksss, but I knew what I was getting myself into in that dept. It has a cold air kit and exhaust, I'm planning on not doing mods past that, but we all know how that changes. Also, since I have no exp with these cars, how is the 1/4 mile looking for these cars? I've done a 14.9 in my supercharged civic (spent lots of money on mods to find out my car is still slow lol). 1/4 isn't a seller for me but I would like it to be quicker then what I have.

For information purposes, it would only be my DD for this summer (By the end I should have enough saved up for a decent dd and keep this as a toy). I used to hate the fox style but after taking a ride in a budy's 500+whp fox, I fell in love. Not to mention it looks beautiful! I was looking into WRX's and Evo's but price wise, you cant beat a fox.

New seals and your T's won't leak nearly as bad as we're telling you, you just want to be prepared. An old, relatively stock GT aughta do that 14.9 if-and here's the whole Fox thing wrapped up for you- you can get it launched right. They don't drive themselves like cars produced since then do. It does not want to hook up, and the more power you throw at it, the harder it is to drive. But ifn you practice, and practice some more, learn what your car does and likes, and learn each tweak you do effects to your car, you will be hugely rewarded. There ain't a feeling in the world like getting a proper 5.0 out of the gate right!:D

A CAI and exhaust Fox is a mid/low 14 on sloppy street tires, 13s on stickies and a good driver.

14.9 and its supercharged? Haha, damn, man!

BTW, my '86 has the original t-top seals and I literally have to put folded towels on the seats to avoid puddles when I wash it. I don't drive my car in the rain and I garage it year round, so I just have not taken the time to replace them. Expect to spend more than 200 bones to replace seals.

So the question is, is this a good buy? I know the last two owners of it. The owner now doesn't want to part with it but has to for his own reasons. It was a garaged car from both owners and barely driven (weekend car). It has a slight oil leak, normal from what I hear (not even a quart after 3-4000 miles. I have been looking for a long time for a fun car to replace my honda (mainly bc it is euro yellow pearl) and I want something mean. Nothing beats the sound of a v8.

Well, if its a good buy depends on the price, doesn't it? Barely driven means check all the rubber parts for dry rotting. Rear main is prolly your oil leak-but keep in mind 5.0's burned a little too, right from the day they were new. I don't know that I'd replace the Honda with it(especially just cuz of the color) but rather just add to your collection- and if you do it right, it'll definitely be mean!

I DD'd mine when it was bone stock, wasnt a big deal to drive it. But they're so slow, i had to start modding it. The more you mod the less you want to DD and sometimes it becomes less road friendly. Id say buy it, leave it stock, and DD it but its nearly impossible to keep a fox stock.

my 89 gt had 181,000 when I bought it. I put exhaust and no cats and no air silencer and it went 14.2. It ran just as strong all the way up to 214,000 when I decided 9psi of oil pressure at idle wasn't comforting and rebuilt another engine I had. Don't be scared away from 120,000 miles. These motors run strong no matter what the mileage.
