Sn95 steering wheel into 87-89 Fox

I honestly would rather not have an airbag in this car. I don't mind them at all, but if the car didn't have airbags, why should I put one in..even if it's not hooked up.

What's funny is my interior is from a 1990, so the visors have the airbag warning on them.

I like the looks of my SN95 wheel in my '03 GT. That's the main reason why i put one in the fox. I love the feel of it when i drive. if this works nicely, i will prob upgrade to the FR500 steering wheel.

I just HATE the escort air bag. I'd rather have the pony bag. It's shaped differently and looks MUCH better IMHO


BTW, i'll be wrapping this up shortly. Just gotta finish mounting the contact ring and splicing the wiring before i bolt it in for good.

Ok some more work. Got the disk mounted on the backside. I simple marked and drilled two small holes and bolted the disk onto the plastic of the SN95 shroud. Since the electrical pins will push on the disk, it's pretty sturdy since the back of the SN95 wheel gives it support all the way around.

You can see here how the electical pins poke through in just the right spot.

My car doesn't have cruise control, so i simply cut the cruise wires and tucked aside. All i needed was the black and purple horn wires. So i soldered them up. If you have cruise, both wheels use a 3-wire setup, so you will be able to make it work.

Final pic is the wiring done and tucked in and ready for the final mounting.

I just need two bolts for the airbag. Anyone know what size pitch they should be?

Steering wheel bolted up. Make sure you use some dielectric grease on the fingers.

I also bolted the airbag on for good. You need two M6 x 1.0 bolts as short as possible for the airbag to keep it from interfeering with the ability to press it in to beep the horn.

I hate the Ford airbag, will need to find me a black Mustang airbag.

Ya, you need an Mustang airbag! Looks good though! I'll be stopping by my local pick a part looking for one myself, now that you've figured it all out. How much $$$ would you be willing to go, if I find a couple? Most likely not black, but it could be dyed. I had your #, but don't know where I saved it.

Every one i've seen on Ebay has gone for $100+. I got the Escort one for $10 but it look slike crap.

I wonder what a boneyard would want? I might be willing to go $50 for one right now, but not sure if i would go higher. I need rear LCA's and UCA's and other stuff to finish my rear end up first.

Just a FYI, i found out that later SN95 wheels switched to a HEX style connection meaning they are not compatible with the fox steering shaft.

I do not know when the change was made though, so please look first at the connection to confirm

i tried to get an a steering wheel for a cavalier once and i was told that it was illeagal to buy a used airbag in new york state.

Btw. Just to update. I've since removed the wheel. Using a non-airbag column with an airbag wheel positions the wheel very close to you. I'd say 2-3" closer. Wasn't natural to drive like this

I think the positioning would be much better using a 90-93 column.

I have seen a few guys do this, and believe the 1993 clockspring and wiring make it almost a fully functional bolt-in affair. I can’t vouch for if this is true or not.


But it definitely isn’t that great on the 87-89 column.
