So one day Mike and I were standing outside of the 7-11 sucking down a Slurpy and talking about the one point twenty-one gigawatts of electricity that we were going to need in order to power the flux capacitor.

We solved that piece in short order and went on to talking about how the interior was coming together. Mike mentioned that he'd forgotten to include any provision for a glove box or console to hold things in. He included cup holders but that was about it. Now, I'm not sure where his head was. He's been pinging like Ricochet Rabbit to install that new 8-track player he got on Ebay for $1.99. Even came with 3 tapes. All Caprenters and all the same album but... to each their own. :shrug:

Anyway, Mike was trying to figure a way to store the two Carpenters 8-tracks in the case that the first one failed... then the next one.


I suggested to mike that he might be able to mount pouches inside the car. I even showed him what they looked like:

Her wasn't convinced, to say the least. I told him that he just wasn't picturing them right so I did a little Microsoft Paint magic to see how they'd look in the interior.



I still don't think he was convinced because all he said to me when I showed them to him was:

Still cool idea IMO

Remember, he is going to be sporting a "weathered" leather dash, so a little wear would fit right in. And Mike, you obviously dont need the controller since your MSII can handle trans controlling, but it was basically given away with the truck as a whole (never liked money anyway). The Veti coozies are a nice touch. They fit like you planned it all along.
 
Let me set the record straight here. The ms2 or any other version does not do Trans control. What I had mentioned was some clever programming with digital relays that technically don't exist, but can be set to trigger themselves inside the software. Then set to an output which in turn will trigger a digital relay.....which will trigger a physical relay....after the setpoint has been reached. o_O I'm working on it, just have to review the control hierarchy to be sure that the control output happens in the correct sequence..... I may need you to Crack your case open so we can build a relay circuit in the proto area if one is not available. Just takes a triac and a few resistors....... :thinking:

The gpio board can be use to control a transmission. They have several 4L60/80 examples currently working. I was seriously considering going that route for the 4R70, but as tough as support is to get from them, opted to go a different route.

Last pool party? Heck that's been a couple years back. I stopped drinking anything with the connotation of "lite", and bought several flattering colors of Euro Glory to the inventory. Heck....I'm a whole lot more sexy now. I will admit I lost the mullet in a terrible igloo cooler incident Johnny Law still won't let me expound on. It is just a general purpose board and can be used for anything really. The fact that people use it for Trans control entirely coincidence!!! And I vote that all factual information be stricken from the record!

I didn't know you were.
I don't know how much damage I've done to the VB when I converted the thing over with the transgo kit. Other than typical reprogramming junk ( different springs, valves, holes, and check balls) this kit completely eliminated the elec trans control module. Now there is a vacuum modulator in its place, inside the trans case. In other words, I don't know how much would be involved to get it to full ecu controllability.

But.

The shifter is a ratchet shifter, and it's part of the design plan. I planned to shift the thing manually, all of the time. And I still want that to work that way.

What would be great, ( and I will hold on cutting the holes for the switches if you think you can do it) is if you can come up with a sure fire way that OD will engage only on instance that the ecu sees a manifold pressure that it would associate as cruise ( between 65-75 mph) and tell the converter to LU after that? Anything other than that MP the OD and LU disengage. All a pair of outputs would have to do to make that work, is to signal a ground. ( That's what I'd do by toggling the switches anyway.)

So, to answer your question, yes, I want you to help.

Thank you sir. That's a little curt though. How will the ecu know how fast the car is going to associate a MAP as interstate cruise speed w/o a speed sensor to associate that to? Or does it use RPM?

I mean, ( granted I don't know jack) how much of a difference in MP is there between cruising at 55 on a highway, and humping it at 75 on I-20 when I drive to the car across the desert SW?

Ohh soo many little obstacles,.....this is why I opted for manual switches.


I have the same gauge set that you do. Consequently, I have dedicated a vss to the speedo. I had a problem with that gauge set on the last build, I could never calibrate the speedo properly using the internal vss that was in the TR3650. This time around I ignored the internal unit, and put one in the tail shaft where it was plugged, and the output shaft was splined to accommodate a speedo sensor or cable. I currently am using the summit supplied speedo sender that came with the gauge set.

That all goes to say that I have two sensors on my 4R70, and I'm not using one of them at present. I don't know if the tail shaft mounted thing is gonna work properly yet though.

The trans is a 3 actual forward gears, with an electronic 4th and LU.

I would think that we could combine hysteresis to act as a fail safe to tell the ecu that the car is where it should be in order to engage 4th. W/O splicing into the speedo signal, and W/O installing a micro switch. That'll take a fair amount of driving to determine where the rpm, map, and tps all live together to say " I'm cruising on the interstate now, activate OD" to the ecu. I'd think that those combined parameters only happen at a certain speed, always. When to tell the lu to happen......ill just have to drive the thing to know when I want that to happen. But I'd think always w/I seconds after 4th at a certain map.

The only problem with using those parameters to tell the ecu to do that is a slight up hill, or downhill grade where I'd have to either put my foot into the throttle, or lift. Map will change dramatically.

A speedo signal will probably have to be there.

Ya spose I could just tap into the existing signal? How does the ecu correlate pulse count to speed there?

There really isn't a place for a micro switch on the shifter. B&M already provided 2 that are there for neutral SS, and B/U light. I'd have to Frankenstein a mount to hold a third, and fab up a tab to activate the switch if we actually need confirmation that the trans is in 3rd.
Since that won't happen for awhile yet, I guess I'll actually have to install the switches to make that determination. I was thinking that I'd just put them on long pigtails, and not cut them into the console, but after considering what could go wrong there,... ( the 4th gear pigtail falls between the seat, and I'm needing to slow down to get off the I state, now I'm grubbing around for that thing, unable to downshift, going 35 mph on an off ramp,cars lugging,.............). I'll just go ahead and mount the switches. Maybe they can serve as a manual override in the future.
 
Hhmmm. I'm gonna need to do some more reading on this. We need some way to tell the ecu that we are in 3rd otherwise you may jump into OD in slow city traffic.

Either way, we can only command 2 parameters at a time on any given output. So we would need to create an expansion area or get a gpio card...... OR give up some other functions. Darn it........ I think 2 parameter control (with hysteresis) and a micro switch would work well. Or even a push button to say 'hey go into OD.'

Set up this way you can toggle OD with a latching relay. And use the MS control as the seal in.
