Beers Of Stangnet

Throughout the week I've been knocking these down. I'm working on one of the Duck-Rabbit Ambers right now but have had the OBX Beer, Corolla Gold, Pamlico Ale, and Highland Gaelic Ale already. They were all fairly typical for what they were...a Kolsch, a pilsner, a pale ale, and an Irish ale, respectively. All pretty good overall.

I'm under the influence of the Bastard tonight.... image.webp
Kind of hard to appreciate the sexy new Samsung in the background, watching the latest Spider-man. It's way better than I thought it would be. I like the new spider-man, he's that kid from Hacksaw Ridge.

Have some updates from tonight and this past weekend.

Hell or High Watermelon from 21st Amendment. I was looking for another wheat to try from the local liquor store...my brother was with me and he had made his selections, and suggested this since he likes most of the other stuff from 21st Amendment. This wheat is pretty good...it's got a slight cloudiness to it and the watermelon flavor is extremely subtle. But the tiny bit that's there seems like the artificial watermelon flavoring you find in most everything else.

Over the weekend, the girlfriend and I were down in Virginia Beach and on Saturday afternoon we hit a couple breweries down there. First up was Back Bay Brewing...that had a space in a small plaza about a mile or so from the beachfront itself and apparently they're expanding to include a farmhouse for brewing. They only distribute in the VA beach & Hampton Roads areas...the taproom we were at was a nice space with a few tables to sit at and a good sized bar, and 4 brewing kettles right there by the bar. They don't serve food, but do allow outside food to be brought in...

Between the two of us, we tried all the beers except the IPAs. The Berliner was a sour, the Gotlandsdricka was a smoky type of beer (described as barbecue in a glass), the lagers were lighter beers, the Gringo was kind of a wheat beer, and the Coconut Stout was a hefty stout with a hint of coconut flavoring to it. I had a pint of the Gringo, she had a pint of the Steel Pier, and the other 4 were done as a flight.

Next up was the Wasserhund Brewery. I don't know if they distribute or not, but their brewpub was a pretty good size. It was located in another strip-mall-type area and had a large bar area, a dozen or so tables, and the kettles were in another room right next to the dining area. They served food which was mostly bar fare like pizzas, burgers, and other small bites:

Another decent selection of beers but we only tried five this time, all in a flight. Should be able to see what we sampled on the ticket attached to the flight.

Good places to try! There was another brewpub in The Shops area but we didn't go to that. Between these two, and then having lunch at the 11th Street Taphouse in between, I'd had my fill of beer for the afternoon...I did have to drive after all.

Sounds like a great outing! I love brewery hopping days.

Gotlandsdricka, meaning “Drink of the Good Land”, is believed to have been the beer of the Vikings. It is a Smoked Beer by style. Here is a description from Beer Advocate;

Not to be confused with a traditional Rauchbier, a Smoked Beer can be quiet a robust, even an overpowering beer, more so with versions that use peat smoked malt which carries a cloying smoked flavor that can ruin a beer in excess. Peat smoked malts are used in many other styles, like Scotch Ales in a liberal way though many American brewers use more typically in Porters. The flavor of peat smoke tends to be much stronger and more assertive so brewers use very modest amounts in the mash.

Also, those weren't brew kettles behind the bar. Most likely fermentors considering the size of the brewery. Could possibly be brite tanks or serving tanks.

Very, very few breweries have more than one brew kettle.

I think i've doubled my number of posts due to this thread.

Here's latest reason why.

A very hoppy ale. I'm actually adding some salt to my first one just to knock down some of the bitterness. Can't say I'll buy it again, but I had to once......Cheers everybody and have a happy saturday night.

It should be noted that "IBU's" isn't a good judge of how bitter a beer tastes. It's soley an equation involving the amount of alpha acids in a batch of beer.

You could have both a pilsner and an IPA with 44 ibu's. Obviously, the IPA will taste more bitter.

It's all about perceived bitterness which varies by person and type of beer. But IBU's are still the standard way to measure and communicate a beer's general bitterness. It's just a measurement of the isohumulone (isomerized alpha acid), in PPM, in the beer.

I would have to say that stating out of the two that an IPA would obviously be "hoppier" would be inconsistent also. If the pilsner was dry hopped, it would tend to have a "hoppier" flavor to most people. There is definetely more factors to consider than IBU's, but it's still a good way to measure and try to communicate a bitterness without actually trying a beer. I find its way more consistent than asking a person if the beer they just drank is hoppy. People's tastes are way more inconsistent. But thats me....

True.

It's interesting to note how people have become more "sophisticated" concerning beer over the years, mainly here in the states. Especially since the craft beer microbreweries became established, and the legality of brewing at home.

When I got stationed in Germany the first time back in 1981 I had thought Michelob was a fancy beer!

Then I went to my first beer fest. My horizons broadened significantly after that, at least beer wise.

It definetely is interesting to see the change over the years. I remember when i started drinking, the first couple years were filled with Pabst, Natty Ice, and Rolling Rock. Then i discovered a local place that made a beer called "Scarlet Lady" which had flavors i never had before, and liked alot. From then on, it was all over.

It's also interesting to note how snobby people have gotten about there beer. I have friends that pick on other people because of what they drink, or will not touch what someone supplied for a party because it isn't high enough "class" for them. Im a "to each there own" type of guy. I prefer a craft beer but have no problem downing some Yuengling lagers on a hot day while playing some cornhole.

I enjoy a good variety of beers, from some mass-produced ones to various microbrews. I generally don't like light beers, but Bud Platinum is awfully tasty on a hot day. I don't like IPA's much, but if they're not overly bitter I'll have some at a party. The only time I had to go buy something was a family gathering, where the 3 beers they had were "shandy's" or Blue Moon. My one cousin and I quickly ran out and got some actual beer! The local market wasn't all that big, but we did okay with Stella Artois and Yeungling Black &Tan. ;)
