Fox How to soften the ride on a 91 vert ?

Weight...the car needs weight in it. Get yourself a big assed sub enclosure, throw it in the back seat. Add two 35 pound 12" subs, a heavy as hell Orion 4 channel amp, a gigandor Sub amp, then add a dedicated battery with cables to the trunk..

Or just marry a large woman and throw her in the back.

The car will ride like a Lincoln mk8 after that.

Lol , i got a tiny trunk for subs - I put my 8s behind front seats on floor ( sounds great when top down - running a 1985 Yamaha amp and 1993 MTX blue thunder amp - small amps but hit hard ! ( still looking for a 1987 Fosgate punch150hd )
 
Buy a different car ? No really it is still a mustang at the end of the day . They were never soft riding cars . Can adjustable shocks help ? Sure until you set it soft so it rides great and get that one pothole that the shock is so soft it feels like the tire is coming through the car .

Compromise . You wanted a mustang - soft riding isn’t exactly in the vocabulary .

My post was how to soften the ride... not how to change into a soft riding car . Me , not being a mechanic can think of one idea that may work - go to 15” rims with more tire and air ; Just to clarify , I am specifically asking if certain type / brand of shocks or struts are more stiffer then others - I know most mustang people may want stiffer , so it’s a bit of reverse engineering
 
Softest will be OE replacements. Your Monroe's, or Gabriels or even your lower level KYB's

Performance aftermarkets tend to be firmer to compensate for the spring rates that people usually put on when they lower the car.
 
I've been chasing this better ride myself for years. I've tried everything but finally gave up. To date one good thing I did to mine to help the ride was Maximum Motorsports full-length subframe connectors. It didn't soften the ride but it did make the car feel better going over those bumps. I put the KYB strut and shock kit from LMR on. OH!! One thing that actually did help was to go to these ultra-high-performance all-season tires like most cars come with now.


This actually softened the ride the most out of everything I tried.
 
Put a pillow on the seat. Might help ya ;)

I really like the strange 10 way shocks and struts. Work well and don’t cost a fortune, and quality is decent. Personally, I’d sacrifice a little ride quality for hook.

Imo it’s best just to have 2 cars. Some of the roads around Savannah are atrocious, I’d never want to take my mustang down them. I know most other cities are similar.
 
Kyb in my experience has always rode super stiff . I had a 2000gt with them and hated them . Monroe was always a softer riding strut / shock
 
You guys think I'm joking.

The red car was probably carrying 500+ more pounds in it than it was when it had the 4 cylinder in it.( probably more). In its previous state, it was god awful. Every bump was like hitting a pothole. And when it was a pothole it would chatter your fillings out. After putting in the heavier drivetrain, adding sound deadener, the roll bar, the bigger tank, the audio system, and all of the steel body mods, the ride changed dramatically from " I hate this thing" harsh to an acceptable firm.

Lighten up your car in an effort to go faster, and you'll go the opposite way...and no decent shock or spring is gonna make that ride any better w/o gutting the character of the car altogether.

The Monster has the same added weight regimen, and together with the longer wheelbase ..I'd actually characterize the ride quality as really nice.
Both cars did have 4 corner coil overs with really soft springs.. ( the sole purpose being to support the weight while allowing the car to rebound/extend) I'm sure that had something to do with it too.

Totally correct . I didn’t ruin my car totally but let’s say lightning up the front the way I did this go round did make it a bit harsher . It’s no bucket of bolts drag car or rattle trap by any means ( less the heimjoints in the rear upper control arms )
 
Softer coil springs along with the softer shocks. Look at this moog chart. Match the stock spring part number and start from those specs. Look for a softer rate in the same spring style. When picking the height, get them taller than stock. Softer will compress more under the cars weight. So a taller height softer spring might get you where you want. I did this route when putting rear coils in a 79 Malibu wagon. The springs I ended up were designed for a late 80's to mid 90's Lincoln Continental. These Moog coils are pretty cheap. Be gentle with them on the install and return if they dont do what you like and try another set
