1993 Cobra Rearend?

Hey guys, just picked up this rear end and was trying to figure out what it came out of. I was told a 93' cobra but it has no tag a TA rear diff cover and ssbc calipers with a few markings on the housing. It is 30 years old and obviously modified also was told it has 3.50 gears, I know cobra/svo/tbird came disc? I haven't ripped into it yet to get a closer look or measurments.....Thoughts?

There's no way to really tell with the tag missing.

All 86-98 housings are essentially the same. That one has an F0 part number, so it's at least 1990+. I don not know what a new number superceeded it.

The brakes are 93 cobra style, but from SSBC, similar to this kit but not the same one. All i could find in a quick search

The cobra came with 3.08's but that was also optional on any of the 5-spd GT/LX cars as well.

Inconclusive, but given the SSBC brake setup and not original 93 cobra brakes, i'd say no

Well at least it was not to bad a price to go full disc, just plug and play so i figured i'd grab it. It's also a hell of a lot cleaner than my stock for sure!

I swapped a turbo t axle awhile back, it’s 3.55 from the factory. Supposed to be identical to a ‘93 Cobra axle

Soo it's coming along slowly but surely, i found out it has 331 gears in rear, i figure it is probably a 90-93 fox rear with disc brake conversion and higher gear setup as the axels measure standard length......which is all i wanted anyway

That will definitely help both with the gears and the better brakes. Just a quick reminder that you will need to gut the proportioning valve side of the combination valve as per the installation instructions.

I had this kit on my T-Bird and failed to do this (was back in 1998 and I was in a rush and missed that part) and the brakes sucked.

There is some other really good info in the install instructions as well like how to install the new MC and installing the 3 to 2 brake line conversion for the new MC. Should be a great improvement over the stock gears and brakes.

Thanks for the link, i picked up an SVO MC as recommended by LMR with a proportioning valve and adapter lines was hoping to put the lighter cobra style in but they say the SVO is my only option for an 86'

What front brakes are you running?

I would not run an SVO MC with those rear brakes if you are running stock 60mm front calipers.

That’s what I am getting at with asking what front brakes. The SVO unit will most likely have too big of a piston.

Well, I planned on running LMR's 11" 4 lug rotors with my 87-93 spindles that i have, so I can fit my 17x8 Saleen rims on this car without issue.
Why what are your thoughts? do I even need to change my stock 86' MC with this setup?

You do.

Stock calipers are 60mm units, even the 87+ units. With the 45mm cobra rears, you will want a 1” bore MC like the 1993 cobra uses.

You have two options:

1985 town car MC with 1” bore that will be direct bolt on.


Or 1993 cobra Mc using the MMBAK-17 adapter kit

Master Cylinder Installation Kit, 1993 Cobra/1994-95 GT m/c in 1980-86 Mustang

Driving that setup with SVO MC will suck. Pedal will be rock hard.
