Progress Thread Komo's 1990 GT - Parts Gathering Purgatory & Home Remodel

Got the passenger side door weatherstripping in. This side went easier I didn’t remove the A pillar trim like I did on the drivers side. Saves time by not having to remove the speaker grill in the dash. Just used some trim removal tools to make room.

Because that’s done I was able to button up the rest of the interior from taking out the ECU.

Then started removing my emblems:

Gonna let this soak in goo-gone before taking my drill eraser to it. Too late and too loud for that right now.

Another productive night.

Finally got around to ordering two new front tires. Same Continental Extreme Sport Contact 02's as the rears, except 245/45/17's. HOPEFULLY this gets rid of my 'bump bump bump' when driving around, whenever i get the car back to driving condition, lol

Started using the Eastwood Fender roller last night. My front Cobra brake calipers block the roller tool from going rearward though so i can only roll the fenders like from 10:00 to 12:30 if that makes sense. I've watched some youtube videos and no ones brake calipers get in the way. Any tips?

The fenders have already been rolled slightly but they didn't do a great job. The rears are worse so i definitely need to do them.

Sounds good. I hadn't seen anyone (at least in videos) need to do that so i was thinking i was doing something wrong or had the tool set up incorrectly.

On a side note, i really just need to get rid of these H&R Race Springs and increase the ride height slightly. I think that would solve some of my rubbing issues. BUT, i want to go Coilovers and don't have the cash to put towards those at the moment.

How about a different size spring isolator?

Thanks for the link but these springs are just too harsh for my liking anyways. Something i need to deal with eventually. I recall having the Eibach Pro-Kit on my previous Fox and it was firm but not too harsh. IF i don't go coilovers up front, i'll probably swap out the H&Rs for the Eibachs.

I get ya.

Came home today after work… was just out in the garage actually just throwing some stuff away and noticed a small pool of liquid underneath the coolant overflow tank. Haven’t dug into it but it better not be my brand new overflow tank leaking.

I installed that just a little while back and it’s been fine, was out working on the car last night without issue. Seems odd it would leak without the car even being turned on in a month or so.

Curious about that Eastwood roller. I need to get one and roll mine I'm just worried about the 35 year old paint. You using a heat gun on the paint to keep it from cracking? Looking forward to see how you make out with it.

That seems like a nice tool to have. I need to wait for warmer weather to roll mine. Still cold here. Just snowed today....wtf.

I will use a heat gun when I get into it more. I mocked it up on my front drivers wheel and as mentioned, couldn’t really get it to work right without hitting my caliper.

With that said, the PO already rolled the fenders (rolled-ish, banged in some spots - shoddy work) so I already have some paint chipping along the edge unfortunately. Hopefully doing it more, even with heat, doesn’t just make it worse.

I did remove more of my inner ground effect and tonight plan on heating and massaging the inner fender liners. I think I’ve made enough room except for the liners at this point.

The rears do need more fender rolling in general.

The alternate, alternate method = one or two 300-500 watt work lights.

You gotta be real careful with the heat gun. The lamps, placed at a safe distance, allow you to go mow the grass while everything heats up evenly.\

And of course... Nice and gradual adjustments on the roller.

Get the thing setup so that you can make full sweeps. Whatever is in the way; Get it outta there.

I was actually thinking of something similar, just putting my space heater pointed at the fender from a safe distance for a while. Not that it’s ‘cold’ in San Diego but at night it does get chilly so the metal is pretty cold.

It's more for the paint than the metal. The metal is just going along for the ride.

I feel that if you tighten the clamp at the bottom of the tank, that your leak will stop. Happened to me after I installed mine. Discovered a small pool under the car as you described. A little tightening of that clamp [see photo] fixed it 100%.

Awesome! Will do that tonight.

Edit: ya it was definitely not tight enough, thanks for the tip.

Also got all the emblem goo off, just waiting on the new ones:

Not that I haven’t noticed it before, but sitting with a drill eraser for a while next to my ground effects, all the double sided tape holding them on is all cracked and dry. Not an immediate job but I’m thinking at some point they will all need to be replaced and the car will need a respray.

Car was originally a Las Vegas car so it makes sense, along with just being old.

Finished making ‘clearance’ in the front wheel wells. By that I mean I didn’t re-roll the fenders, the fronts aren’t actually too bad, mainly the rears that need more rolling/smoothing. I cut away everywhere I saw existing rubbing… I know someone mentioned not hacking up OEM ground effects but these are pretty shot. Missing bolts where bolt holes are cracked or completely torn off, waviness, terrible double sided tape condition… etc. looks ok from a distance but when you’re up close and personal, they suck.

Also got the cobra grill insert template on… debating if I want to do this now or wait…
