Progress Thread finally tuning (and more)

Incidentally, not once was it recommended in any of the tutorials that I either force open loop or disable active learning. Both of those have been left alone throughout this process.

You did set base timing to 10*?
Yeah the base timing is 10 with spout removed. Additionally, the only thing I’ve done with idle is set the physical base idle as per the standard procedure and slot the TPS to get .98v at idle. Even though Harrison goes through a bunch of stuff on idle and correcting for problems, I’ve not needed to do anything with that. Idle wise it’s now better than ever with stock settings.

I’ve got the scaling equation ready. For PLX its voltage x 2+10. In the picture you see the thin green wire that id the analog from the PLX. I’ve got it connected to the pin 27 location on the EGR plug. In the picture I’m back stabbing the harness plug to verify the voltage making through my connections. 2.33v x 2 is 4.66. 4.66 + 10 =14.66. My wideband reads 14.5 at this idle status so close enough for me. Just can’t figure out how to get it displayed on the data log

Am I see'n a yellw wire nut over there?
Did I work on that junk??
You know I don't understand most of that 'puter crap but I'm hang'n.
Wait'n for those WHOOOOSH sounds and road strip'n

Yeah I used the wire nut because the data log hookup for wideband is temporary. I’m not going to leave the Quarterhorse chip in permanently so when I change it for the J3v2 chip I won’t be able to data log without pulling the EEC and putting QH back in anyway. So, I’m borrowing the EGR circuit for tuning purposes but when I’m done tuning I’ll be putting the EGR back in service. I’ve cut nothing on the factory harness so the EGR will be back in service as if it were never messed with. Hence, the wire nut for temporary use only.

I got through the fuel table creation no problems. The spark table? Yikes, I might need help with this. I understand the concept but he was doing some fancy spreadsheet calculations and lost me. This is the last important thing too. Damn! Trying to modify the factory air loads into the expected new loads with boost and putting the timing numbers in is where I’m stuck at the moment. Is there a database anywhere I can view some timing table examples from combos similar to mine. Or, I could give some data points to someone and have them build me a timing table something better than me just winging it. Or, maybe I’ll sleep it off and try to follow along the tutorial again later. Hmmmm

Most tuners just set the tables to run off of a single table. I believe I just added 4* to all tables across the board, because I run aluminum heads, and then pulled back a bit where it was already asking for 40* at cruise. I basically add what I think is right and listen for knock. I might have added 6* on the WOT table.

Here's the thing, you can't know what optimal timing is on your setup without a dyno and tons of tuning time, or pulling plugs a lot after getting the fuel right. You can do WOT timing at a track vs acceleration, especially if you have speed in the datalog (RPM with gearing). That really takes some programming and math, though. Or, you can simplify and just adjust the curve globally watching trap speeds until it doesn't gain anything.

Realistically, either pay a tuner, or just post your setup, here, and we can chat about some universal adjustment.

All of that said, you should be focused getting fuel right, and only after you're happy with your fuel settings should you worry about timing.

302 stock bore, AFR 1472 heads. Explorer intake and Explorer 65mm TB. ProM calibrated MAF, Lightning 42lb inj, stock cam 1.7 rockers, v3 8psi at about 6k rpm Boost starts coming in about 2500rpm. I’ll post a spreadsheet with my load scale and rpm’s. If anyone is interested they can fill in the blanks.

I’m just being a wussy. The whole process went smoothly until trying to correlate between NA air loads and boosted air loads for the timing table. I have the fuel down already. In order to follow the Leech tutorial better I need better knowledge of using spreadsheets. I appreciate all the help I’ve gotten in this forum. If anyone has time to make a suggestion for a timing table for 8psi with and air load maxing at 160% and a redline rpm of 6k, I’ll consider it. Thanks

Ps. Here is my estimated NA air load at various rpm. Not sure if that helps
