Progress Thread “Rising from Ashes 2” 95 Saleen S-351 build

Damn, I can only hope my car is even close to this shine when I repaint it. I've gained a new appreciation for all the hard work you've done since I've been learning body work and paint on my own. I'm curious, what are your plans for the drivetrain?

Thanks! It will be a 351 based vortech supercharged with a Tremec 3550 just like it came with. I have a dart 408 built for it but id like one out of another S-351

Block and respray on the quarters, hood and front/rear bumper, tonneau cover finally has me satisfied. When you can see the gloss in your business card in the glass reflection of your paint. Its there!!!!!

Been meaning to ask, what sanding blocks do you use when sanding the clear? Do you find you mainly use one or two for the whole car? The only car I'm likely to paint and sand is my own Mustang, so I'm reluctant to buy a whole set of sanding blocks if I'll only need two or three.

I started out sanding my rear quarter panel using just a flat pad, figuring it would flex over the curves. But I kept blowing through the paint around the sharper curves. I ended up cutting up a pad so it would flex around the curves, and it worked out a lot better.

All my clear sanding blocks I’ve made here. Nobody makes any Im satisfied with. But most of mine fit in my hand so I can control them better. I dont think I’ve ever sanded thru the paint. Tape the body line and hard edges and lines and dont sand. Those will burn thru faster than anything else

With 8 coats of clear, I daresay you've never sanded through them! I've learned the hard way that it's really easy to take too much paint off when sanding & polishing. And thanks for the excellent tip - I would not have thought to tape the hard edges to keep from sanding across them.

Went over the engine bay and underside of hood with the polisher. Since Paint is now done. Loaded into the trailer and headed to the nice garage.
