I'm going to be saving up for a updated mustang in the form of a cobra..right now i have a auto 02 GT and was looking to get just a manual but i have been thinking to just save longer and get a 01 or 03 cobra....i know 03 much more powerful but overall do 01s still get a lot of hp outta small mods like cai...catback and xpipe as 03 do or should i just stick with saving for an 03 any help...and any ratings on the 01???what you guys all think of 01s?

I'd save for the 03...01's are nice but they don't quite respond to the mods like the 03's do...with a pulley, tune, catback, midpipe, and a CAI you can have close to 500rwhp for right around $1000 in mods...With the same mods on an 01 (minus the s/c pulley of course) you are looking at about 300rwhp if you are lucky...

I agree the 03/04 would be a better start, but many 03/04s are going for close to twice as much $$$ as a 01. The 03s on the lot were going for $28/29K and I bought my 01 for $16K. Thats alot of cash to save up for. It's basically a financial decision, get the 03/04 for $450 a month or get a 2001 for $250 a month. The choice is yours, but I like having the extra $200 per month to spend on mods.

Say i get a stock 2001 Cobra...what are top mods to get it to 300rwhp...i know its stock 320 but not all to wheels right??? ANyway id much rather pay less so going to look for an 01 cobra....how much hp can the engines handle and can you get them pushing 400 without the use of a blower?? Any help..also do they respond higher to mods like cai/catback/midpipe then say the 02 Gt?? any help..

to get an 01 to put 400hp to the wheels you'd need to get more displacement out of it by stroking and overboring it to a 5.2L, and every single bolton like long tubes, pulleys, cold air, etc, and then a good ported set of 03/FR500 heads with a stout set of cams in it...300rwhp is a more realistic goal with the stock block and pretty much long tubes, full exhaust, cold air, and pulleys should get you there...

You may have an extra 200 a month for mods, but for 200 a month, you're mods will most likely never add up to the power an 03 can make stock.. :nice:

Are you serious? Never add up to the power of a stock 03. At $200 a month, thats $2,400 a year, and over the 5 years you will be making payments on the 03 that will be $12,000. So your saying for $12K you can't make an 01 put out stock 03 power. Ever heard of a Kenne Bell, or a Novi 2000, or Twin Turbos. With that kind of money you can do alot, and you would destroy a stock 03.

Side Note.
Not to bash the 03/04 guys, I wish I had one, but the market right now is horribly over priced for used 03/04s. Less than 6 months ago they were going for about $23/24K (great buy, I wish I hadn't waited), but now they are in the high $20s low $30s. The market is justified, because why pay $25K for a new 2005 Mustang GT, when you could get a one year old Cobra for less. On the same lot where I bought my cobra they had three 03s for $28K/$29K, when I bought my 01 for $16K. I could not justify the extra money for the difference in the cars. I would rather have the $12K to mod my 01 then a stock 03. And because if I got the 03 I would mod it anyway and mods + big payment = poor house.

So in summery, ALL cobras are great cars, get what you can afford, and have fun with it. :flag:

Orlando...how many miles did your 01 for $16k?

.....methinks your paying 250/mo 'cause you might have financed half of it (or for 5yrs). Reason I say so is that my 01 w/17k mi cost $18.5k @ 5% (4 yrs) & payin close to 400/mo

Back to the subject....I wanted a snake & didn't want to spend $$ on the 03/04. Purchased the 01 & will wait a couple years or so for the 07 Shelby.

It had 68K miles on it, it was somebodys DD highway car by the looks of it, it was totally stock with quite a few bug/rock marks on the front bumber/front of hood. I also got a good deal on it b/c it was the second car I bought from the same guys in less than a year ( my 03 GT had some issues that Ford couldn't fix, so I traded up ) I threw a few credit cards at it to get some of the DDness out, and now its a beast. Hopefully I can get a rebuild and a massive supercharger just in time for the new GT500 to come out.

Or better and CHEAPER keep my auto 02 GT which i only pay 300 a month and just mod it and have more fun while saving?>?

I didn't realize you already had a GT, I loved my GT. Keep the GT and get a blower. You'll thank yourself in the end because you have made something better than it once was, and you won't lose money on your trade in.

but its an AUTO not a 5speed i was going to just get an xpipe n some flows for now..just for sound...any other cheaper end mods to kick up my speed....not including blower??

Gears, SCT Programmer, intake, TB & Plenum, X pipe, exhaust, that should kick it up a bit. And all but the intake will be good for when you get the blower later. :nice:

I paid only $19K for my Cobra, certified maintenance with 12,600 miles.(came with 3/36 ESP factory warranty)
Three mods done.
Stock tires

I could not justify buy a blower for a blower car, makes no dam sense to me at all.

My car is also a lower production car, so MAYBE it will be worth something some day. (unlike my GT'S = read worthless)

I am happy to buy a like new used car thats 4 years old any day then take a huge $$$$ hit on a new car.

Remember, when it comes to HP you always want more...........

Gotta question for ya... what do you intend on doing with it? Drag race, Autocross, or regular daily driver?

Drag... stick with the GT and get yourself a blower (might want some forged internals while you are at it). I have been beaten by 3 nicely modded GT's.

Autocross... Cobra with IRS.

DD... IMO, too many GTs on the road. Get a Cobra, it will set you apart from the pack.

Also, you asked about power capabilities. I believe the aluminum block in the '99/'01 Cobras can handle about 700hp, but I could be wrong.

Just my 2 cents.
