1.73 roller rockers on stock motor...what to expect??

hey i have some FRPP 1.7s and i was waiting to put them on my motor i am building. i have heard they will change the sound, that true???
also noticable sotp gains???

well i kind of changed plans. I am getting my t5 swap done now.
then start saving cash for heads for my motor.

before, i was budgeting getting the motor done with the t5 swap and getting it done this spring. Well i would get a good upgrade on heads. not much cash to work with. so i would pretty much be throwing a stock headed motor with a Bcam in my car, wouldnt run as fast as it could with new heads, not to mention i never even planned on an intake... so i am getting everything done but the motor and then save some serious cash for a while and get some alum heads and nice intake....

anyway, i am wanting to get some bolt ons like pulleys and cold air done first on my motor, they can easily be swapped to my new motor, and i thought hell why not the rockers now....

Rockers will not change the sound of your engine.

You may add a few HP but I wouldn't say SOTP.

Also remember if you change the rockers to 1.7's then you will need to upgrade your valve springs as well.

BTW FRPP rockers are either 1.72 or 1.60.

If you get Crane Energizer "Cobra" rockers they are 1.70.

Not sure why you would want to run a "B" cam with all the cam's out today.

dude - i keep hearing the B cam is seriously a waste of time - if you are planning on aluminum heads, get something with better specs - u said the word budget so i'm not thinking custom grind - however even the E cam has better specs, or the stage 1 TFS cam - haven't heard many ppl using Lunati cams, but do a little more research -

BTW, save the RR's for your new build - no sense in ripping the intake manifold off just to get to the valve covers for a job where your not really going to feel the results - plus they probably won't clear your valve covers, than your gonna have to work the Vcovers n ur gonna be pissed lol Just hang on tot hem - n check your clearances on the new build also before using them - i went w/ 1.6's on my set up - it's all those little parts added up that make a difference, not just one set of them - which is why on your new build you'll be happy you put them on w/ the new heads, and hopefully a better cam - !! good luck man

They will not clear your valve covers. I have a set and the poly locks really make those suckers tall. You will probably not notice a difference in power, but you will gain a bit. I also recommend going with something other than the B cam. Lunati makes awesome cams, that is the cam I am going with. I have heard of some problems with some of the cams sent out by comp cams being too soft and the lobes wearing flat.

i didn't know you had to change valve springs with 1.7's.....is that a coil bind/or retainer clearance problem due to additional lift, or is it a seat pressure thing with the ramp rates being slightly speeded up, that they need replacing??

im using stock valve springs and stock valve covers with 1.7's. do gt40's have different springs then e7's?

I ran a 13.8 with mid pipe, catback, gears, and bcam, it might not be godly but it wont hurt a stock motor

How do those Nittos compare to your other street tires with 3.73s?

it felt a big difference when i put my 1.7s on...but i also put a cobra intake on as well. search ebay for a used intake. i got my intake with fuel rail and fuel regulator for like 250 shipped. and i got the 1.7s from a buddy for 100 bucks. you just have to take the oil baffle off of the valve cover so they fit. i havent had any issues at all. i dont even have any issues with the rockers hitting the valve covers now with the tfs 1 cam

Pounding out the oil baffles will help, but did your rockers have polylocks? Polylocks greatly increase the height. I have taller valve covers and I still had to pound my baffles. I barely have any clearance on mine. Plus the big difference you felt was mostly because of the intake change, although your rockers did contribute a bit.

no...my rockers were direct bolt on....so i didnt need poly locks or anything

We've seen anywhere from 10-15hp on the dyno with a 1.7 rocker on a stock 5.0L.

I'm with 89sleeper the B cam is the last thing I would stick in the motor. Why not look into a cam made for the 1.7 rockers, you'll need to watch your PTV clearance.

from what i have learned from rick and other people on here is that you need to check piston to valve clearance no matter what cam or cam timing changes you do to a motor. just because "you know some guy who put this cam in his motor and doesnt have any problems" doesnt mean you wont have any. i have a 306 with heads that were milled and a trickflow cam with 1.7 rockers and have close to 1/4" of clearance....but that doesnt mean you will have that same clearance. dont worry about the cam right now....put the 1.7 rockers on and get an intake....or buy a dremel and get a dozen stones for it (if i remember correctly, the green ones work best) and get to work on the stock intake. or go with the 1.7 rockers and find an aftermarket intake and you will be happy

I agree with the above post. It is good practice to check your clearance, every engine is different and you don't want to risk destroying it to save 1 hours time.

bcam has .480 lift with 1.6s and with 1.7s it should be around .512 right???
