10 best v-8 engines period the mighty 5.0

Well my last thoughts on the Camaros....i've NEVER seen a stock Camaro from the '80s run anything faster than 15 seconds...and i've seen plenty of stock Fox's dip into the 13.90s. Now of course, i haven't seen it all, but that's my experience.

Some things just look better on paper. In real world comparisons, the 305 HO's were circling the bowl.

The non-HO 305 sucked with its 170hp..the roller-cam version (L69) had a lot more power...night and day difference. I've seen an '84 L69 Z/28 with an automatic and 4.11s go..it was actually very quick. Had 13.99 potential.

One of my all-time favorite engines is the K-Code 289. Redline @ 8000, 271hp @ 6000, and some torque. We have two '65 K-fastbacks HP and torque aren't the only measurements of engines. Ford put the 3000 mile warranty on these cars for a reason.

Sure the SBF is a great motor, but with its 45 year background, it should be a lot more evolved than it is.

I agree... the little 289 was a pretty good engine...

I guess Ford didn't want to retool the 5.0L engine and put more efforts in the 4.6 which, from a marketing standpoint, sounds better saying DOHC 4.6 than just 5.0L... IT worked because we still have Mustangs, and the Chevy folks lost their cambirds for a while.

A fox with gears and a few bolt ons will dip into the 13.90s, but not bone stock. Bone stock will be a high 14 second, maybe 15.0 car with the average driver. A 305 H.O. is listed to run 15.0 bone stock, and we all know a car can run a little better than the magazines make it run. My buddy had an '87 Formula with a 350 and an auto. With simple bolt ons and a converter it ran 13.3 on slicks. His brother's 305 H.O. had a stock exhaust with the cat removed, and he said the intake was port matched because they were rediculous from the factory. The 305 ran right with the low 13 second formula on the street, he said within a car.

My brother works in Nascar so believe me, I have all the info. The last time Nascar did a dyno session with the top teams it was north of 800-850hp, and the Busch cars aren't too far behind. They're probably 700+. All of your theory on pushrods vs OHC sounds great, but the cup cars spin to 9500 rpm on a regular basis, and I've seen them closer to 10k. There are also a few drag classes with small blocks spinning to 10k. Show me some mod motors putitng out that rpm.

I live in mooresville where like 90% of the nascar teams are and i have seen an ernie elliott motor (a dodge motor) puting out 930hp.
